Leon Wurmser

Dr. Leon Wurmser was first therapist in Baltimore when I had just graduated college. I was at the time mourning the death of my father and trying to find my path in life.. Having grown up in a tight Jewish community in upper Park Heights, I was a typical American Jewish girl without great aspriations other than marriage and family. He was the first person who implored me to look at my value system and to appreciate my intellectual abilities, and to open my mind to scholarship. With his encouragement I began my first job as a medical social worker at Baltimore City Hoppitals, now Bayview Hospital and then matriculated to the University of Maryand School of Social Work, recieving
my Clinical MSW in August of 1971. I remember as I walked into his office he smiled and said, "Here comes a freshly baked social worker." Today, May 14, 2025, I remember him with the deepest respect and gratitude. I have a career
that has filled me with satisfaction and pride and given me more gratification
than I had ever imagined possible. His mentorship, faith in my abilities and dedication to the practice of psychoanalysis have been my inspiration. His humanity and kindness knew no bounds. Knowing him was one of the greatest blessings in my life. May his soul rest in eternal peace.

This is incredibly late, but my name is Dr. Alexandria Peck Berger. My husband was the late Dr. Alexander Berger and the best friend of Leon´s brother, Peter. They were all students together at the University of Zurich. Many years ago when visiting the States we had dinner at Leon´s home in Maryland. Leon had just finished an important paper and he sent it to me at my home in Australia. I still have it. Tge last time we saw Peter wS in Switzerland when my husband was ill and Peter´s sight was gone. Just seeing `the boys´ together again. My husband never told Marlise and Peter he would never see them again. After he died I trued to contact Marlise several tome and left messages but never heard from her. I knew then that things had become difficult. My condolences to the family on your loss even though much time has passed.

Mr. Wurmser was such a brillant, warm-heartet, empathetic psychologist and added so many good thougts and theories. I'm really glad vor his life-work.

My PhD thesis built on the Wurmser's theory about the craving in psychoanalityc approach. I'll miss Leon Wurmser's wise and very clear and ethical behaviour.
