Leonard Kass Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 10, 2025.
Leonard Kass, 91, of the Woodland Hills and Northridge, passed away on March 1st, 2025.

Len was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and Korean war veteran. He is survived by his devoted wife of many years Zita, 3 children, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. Len's family was at the heart of his life, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, wisdom, and dedication. His parents, Philip Koussevitzky (a World War I veteran) and Clara Levine immigrated from Russia and Poland respectively in the early 20th century and settled in New Jersey, where he was born.

A lifelong educator who graduated from UCLA, Leonard spent his career teaching secondary school social studies, history, and political science, inspiring countless students with his passion for the subject. His commitment to learning and teaching extended beyond retirement. Leonard continued to share his love for history, philosophy, classical and mid-20th century music and politics with his community. He was a constant presence at the West Valley Jewish Community Center, where he lectured and led groups on current issues, history, film, and many other topics. When the Center closed, he and Zita convinced The Village at Northridge, a senior living residence, to host the groups. He and Zita ultimately joined the Village in 2024 as residents.

Along with his wife Zita, Len founded the Valley West Democratic Club in the San Fernando Valley in the early 1970s. The club had a profound impact on local social politics for decades. Len's influence in the community was felt deeply. His commitment to progressive causes and candidates from local to presidential helped shape the political landscape of Los Angeles. Candidates they hosted included Tom Bradley, Alan Cranston, George Moscone and Jess Unruh.

Len Kass was a man of great intellect, generosity, and heart. His life's work touched many, and his impact on those around him will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives he enriched.

Lots of wonderful memories staying over at the Kass household. Mr Kass always made the best pancakes Sunday morning either with chocolate chips or blueberries. He always had saltine crackers, peanut butter and Jelly for me to enjoy for afternoon snacks. He had an uncanny ability to remember and site any historical event that we asked about and could explain its historical significance in ways that our young minds could understand.
You will be missed

Dear Len, so glad I was able to visit with you and Zita over the past couple of years. Thank you for being my uncle.
