Leonard J. McLaughlin Sr.

Leonard J. McLaughlin, Sr., 87, of Erie, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2017 at his residence following a lengthy illness. He was born in Erie on March 6, 1930 a son of the late Josephine Robie.

Leonard graduated from Academy High School where he played basketball and ran track. He went on to graduate from Gannon University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business and also played basketball. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and worked at American Sterilizer as a sales representative for 33 years before retirement. Following retirement, he worked with the Quinn Law Firm for 10 years.

He was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church and loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in sporting events. He also loved spending time with his family and his dogs. In his younger years, he participated in the Polish Olympics

In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Kathleen McLaughlin.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Kroto McLaughlin; three daughters, Eileen Widomski and her husband, Thomas, of Erie, JoAnn Schopman and her husband, Gerry, of Camp Hill, Pa., and Susan McLaughlin Dahlkemper of Menlo Park, Calif.; two sons, Leonard J. McLaughlin, Jr. and his wife, Kimberly, of Erie, and Jeremy M. McLaughlin and his wife, Nicole, of Buffalo, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, Andrew, Jr., Abigail, and Joseph Dalhkemper, Katherine Schopman, Matthew and Gabrielle Widomski, and Sarah, Emily, Leonard III, Ryan, Joseph, Annalee, and Adele McLaughlin; and many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. and are invited to a prayer service there on Wednesday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Luke Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Trinity Cemetery.
