Leonard Popewczak Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 21, 2018.

SHAMOKIN - It is with great sadness that the family of Leonard "Lenny" David Popewczak, 3560 Upper Road, announced his premature passing following an extraordinary battle with an unyielding illness. On Sunday, March 18, 2018, at the young age of 51, in the presence of his beloved wife of 24 years Cindy. Lenny passed peacefully and with dignity.

Lenny was a role-model and was admired, respected, and adored by his children Shane, Cheyenne, Sara and Charlie and, additionally, by his considerable extended family. Not enough can be said about how Lenny has touched the lives of many, including the many foster children he has mentored over 14 years, and the countless people who consider it an honor to have called him "friend." Those who have known him would consider him benevolent, gracious and compassionate and would consider his untimely sickness and death nothing short of unreasonable. However, the gifts he has bestowed on those will not ever be forgotten.

Lenny graduated from Southern Columbia high school in 1984. At the time of his passing he was the manager of Tarpon Electric and was on the Shamokin CERT Team. His previous accomplishments include being in the Pa. State Wrestling Hall of Fame, and earning the prestigious highest Boy Scout achievement of Eagle Scout, after which he continued to stay active as a Scout Master.

In addition to caring for his family, he had a passion for golfing, hunting, camping and a profound love of motorcycle riding. Even after his passing, Lenny's humanitarianism and selflessness had again shown through, as he had donated his organs and body to science.

Lenny was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Popewczak; grandfather, Edward Derr; grandmother Charlotte Derr; grandmother Geneva Derr; and uncle, Gary Derr.

POPEWCZAK - Leonard "Lenny" David Popewczak, of 3560 Upper Rd., Shamokin. A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, March 25, at Bethel Union Chapel. All that have known him are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to Bethel Union Chapel in care of Pastor Butler, 3949 Upper Road, Shamokin, PA 17872.

We were saddened to hear about Lenny's passing. We met back when our son's were young and in scouts. Lenny always had good things to say no matter what the circumstance and always had care and concern for others. Our prayers are with his family, who we know loved him deeply. Bill, Cindy, Patrick, and Noelle.

I will miss a good golf mate, who went thru a lot. You, Buck, and I will play again, when we enter "the Pearly Gates".

Jim and I do not have words to express our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family in the passing of Lenny. He was, by far, a kind soul who spread kindness everywhere. We are honored to have met him in our lifetime. Heaven has received another angel in its keeping. Remember.....When our loved one is called HOME, HE leaves a gift of memories in exchange.

The one thing that I will always remember about this gentle spirit of a man is his amazing smile. He could light up a room with it. Rest in Peace.
