Leonard Slusser Obituary

1933 ~ 2016
Leonard Kimball Slusser peacefully passed away on November 6, 2016 in Holladay, Utah at the age of 83 after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born May 4, 1933 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Leonard Miner Slusser and Alice Kimball Slusser. He married Janice Kenward on May 4, 1953 in the LDS Salt Lake Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Janice; his five children, Kim Slusser (Diana), Mark Slusser (Sherrie), Rosemary Slusser Steed (Dennis), Katherine Slusser Barrus (Garth), and John Slusser (Keri); his brother, Heber Slusser (Natalie); and his 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, sister Marian Slusser Livsey, and brother-in-law David Livsey.
Leonard served in the United States Army as a chaplain during the Korean War. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Utah. He worked for many years as the manager of Western Garden Center in Salt Lake City. In his later years, he and Janice served as missionaries for the LDS church in Michigan. He later served as Branch President for Wasatch Valley Rehabilitation Branch. An avid outdoorsman, Leonard loved to fish, hike, river raft, ski, scuba dive, sail and travel the world.
The family would like to thank the physicians, nurses, technicians, volunteers, hospice caregivers, and researchers at Huntsman Cancer Institute who helped Leonard fight cancer and who continue to help others. Their dedication to Leonard and his family made a significant difference in his longevity and well-being.
There will be a viewing on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with funeral services to follow at 12:00 p.m at the L.D.S. To my extraordinary Uncle Leonard, I miss you, I love you. I always have... so much!!! Until we meet again, I will cherish the memories and the joy you brought into my life. It won't be the same without you here... and like with my deceased parents, I will miss not being able to talk to you or see you until my mortality has ended. But, in your passing, your family members, including myself, have made new and stronger connections. Through the void we feel, I know you are feeling joy and relief... and for the rest of us, the experience has brought us all closer. We can always spin things into positives, and I know that it's strange to say that you've indirectly facilitated that. Though there are always bumps in the road, it all works out in the end. Amazing: life, and eternal progression. To those who read this, know that he was the most giving, loving, generous, and caring person to those who were in need. One-of-a-kind. I can't believe he's gone. I look forward to that great reunion when this life is over and all we all meet again. (Heidi Livsey, my mother was his sister, who with my father, passed many years ago. He was there for me every day during the 4 1/2 months I was in the hospital after that happened, and though he had just lost his sister, he made me smile and laugh. Like I stated in the beginning, an extraordinary man!))
