Leonard Taccogno Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 29, 2025.
Leonard Anthony Taccogno, 83, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully on September 10, 2025.

Born on July 31, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Leonard lived a full and spirited life defined by family, service, hard work, and a love of adventure. On October 16, 1964, he married the love of his life, Susan, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage.

Leonard proudly served his country in the United States Army. After serving three years, he pursued his passions with unmatched energy: running marathons and bodybuilding with his dear friend Tony Cano; looking up at the stars as an avid student of astronomy; and watching science programs on PBS. He was also a devoted Notre Dame football fan, never missing a chance to cheer on the Fighting Irish.

His love of cars and racing led to some of his proudest achievements. In 1969, during the inaugural Bonneville Raceway event, Leonard and his racing partner, Royce Virgin won the NHRA Stock Eliminator crown. The following year, they set the national class record in the Stock Eliminator quarter mile and then competed at the Winter Nationals, where they won in their class level. His accomplishments on the track reflected the same determination and discipline that characterized all aspects of his life.

Leonard embraced his Italian heritage with deep pride, and his home was always filled with warmth and laughter. Known as the "neighborhood fix-it man," he could get just about any car or small engine running again, and he was always ready to lend a hand, no matter what he was doing. His strong work ethic (and inability to sit still) guided him throughout his career in auto parts sales and purchasing, and his generosity of spirit endeared him to all who knew him.

To his children, Leonard was not only a loving father but also a loyal friend. He shared with them his quirky sense of humor, his infectious smile, and his unwavering belief in helping others. His kindness, humor, and determination will be dearly missed but forever remembered.

Leonard is survived by his devoted wife, Susan, and their three children: Mary Anne (Ken), Tony (Christine), and Jim (Charee). He is also lovingly remembered by his eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

A celebration of Leonard's life will be on Saturday, October 11, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Starks Funeral Parlor, 3651 South 900 East, Salt Lake City.
