WIEGAND LEONARD JOSEPH, Jr.
Age 91, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully, on Friday, July 8, 2016. Born on March 25, 1925, he was the son of the late Margaret and Leonard Wiegand. He was the loving husband to the late Dorothy Wiegand for 60 years; brother of David (Judy) Wiegand; father of George (Denise Goepfert) Wiegand of Tempe, AZ, Claire (John) McConaha of Pittsburgh, PA, Keith (Heidi) Wiegand of Tucson, AZ, Judy (Robert) Scherrer of Pittsburgh, PA and Andrea (Tom) Meyer of Louisville, KY; grandfather of Eric, Allison, Keith "Joey" Joseph, Lauren, Regis, Samantha "Sami" and Robert (Jen); great-grandfather to Olivia and Max. Leonard is survived by his dear friend, Jeanne Starr. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Regis (surviving, Margaret) and Kenneth and his grandson, James C. Scherrer. A veteran of the WWII Army Air Corps, Leonard, a career independent life insurance agent, with his business partner Jeanne Starr, implemented and was instrumental in establishing the tax sheltered annuity plan for the Pittsburgh Public School system teachers/ employees. In his early 60's, he earned his solo pilot's license, a lifelong dream. Leonard enjoyed refurbishing bikes for children and garage sales. He introduced windsurfing in the late 60's to western Pennsylvania. Leonard developed and produced travel logs on the history of the deep south in the 80's. He was also a master level member of Toastmasters. The family would like to extend a sincere thanks for many years of compassionate care to Karen and the staff of Asbury Place. A graveside service will be held privately. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2016, at 2:30 p.m. at the Hickman Chapel at Asbury Heights, 700 Bower Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15243.
