Leonard O'Brien Windley

Leonard “Pop” O’Brien Windley, age 89, a resident of Pinetown, NC, passed away on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice of Greenville.

A visitation will be held Saturday, February 12, 2022, 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm at Joseph B. Paul Jr. Funeral Service with a graveside service following at 2:30 pm at the Everett's Community Cemetery with Minister Dennis Davis officiating.  Pallbearers will be Russell Windley, Glen Windley, Adam Fyle, Eric Smith, Ricky Windley, Jeffrey Windley, and Chandler Buck.  The family will be receiving friends at the home of Leonard’s son Gary, 236 Jones Bridge Road Pinetown, at other times throughout the week.   

Leonard was born on September 13, 1932, to the late Charlie Hertford and Myrtle Latham Windley in Beaufort County.   He obtained his associates degree and worked as an architectural draftsman and building supply salesman for many years before becoming a security guard for the Pungo District Hospital in Belhaven.  He was a long-time member of the Free Union Free Will Baptist Church.  Some called him “Linkey”, no one would call him anything but a friend as he never met a stranger.  With a love of woodworking, gardening and caring for his animals, he was always busy.

Along with his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Pauline Ambrose Windley and their son Brien Windley.

Leonard is survived by three sons: Gary Windley and wife Pat, Charles Windley and wife Michelle, John Windley and wife Susan; Sister: Barbara Windley Little; Daughter in Law: Nancy C. Windley, two grandsons: Glen Windley and Russell Windley, two granddaughters: Emily Windley, Megan Windley; three step-grandsons: Adam Fyle, Brian Smith, Eric Smith, great-grandsons: Ryan Windley and Cameron Windley; five great-granddaughters: Rachel Windley, Briley Jamison, Adaline Jamison, Farrah Fyle, and Bristol Fyle and his cat Boo Boo.
