I grew up with Leroy a great person and mentor to many kids growing in the Williams Park (Newbury Park) in the 60's. Park Directorm at gthe time was Bouncy Searway, another good person and mentoer of Kids in the 60"s I will always cherish Having grown up in this era with friends Leory, Hal and Gary Chammack, Ed Okie, and all the King family, as well as other kids who hung out at the park. Leroy, Hal,Ed and often played cards at the park and Leory's house. His mother and sister would be in the kitchen laughing at us hagleing with each other as we played. I knew Leory's ex wife and children. Great times and a great person to have grown up with, a tremendous athelete. We playd alot of basketball games at the park court, tennis also. RIP my dearest friend and condolences to his children

So sorry for the loss of a wonderful man. I knew of Leroy at UMO. I worked there for 22 years, but the experience I had was when we held Maine Special Olympics at the college in the summertime. The athletes really loved him and always crowded around Leroy. I NEVER have seen anyone so happy as Leroy was. I always told people when they asked me how come someone died. I always told them that God needed a very special puzzle piece and when it's time, he is going to get it. Leroy must have been that special piece cause I know that alot of people are going to miss his smiling face. RIP friend.

What do you say about a man who has touched so many lives by just his smile. I met Leroy when we were kids growing up in Bangor. He was the first black person I'd ever met and he was so far ahead of the times when it came to race relations in a time of bigotry. He stood tall among men, not because of his height, but because of his class. He was a gentleman all his life and I'll remember him for that. We took different paths though I spent a lifetime in Criminal Justice, but I never forgot him. God speed, Leroy. You made your mark and few of us can claim that honor.

To the Patterson Family,
I graduated from John Bapst in 1985 and played American Legion baseball with the Bangor Comrades for 4 years. I'm sure I played in close to 100 games that he umpired. I always was happy to see Leroy working the game as I knew it would be called professionally and I would have a great conversation with him during the game as most of the time I was catching. I ended up playing baseball at the University of Vermont after my graduation from Bapst. When we played Maine, Leroy was The first to meet me after coming out of the locker room and entering the gate at Mahaney Diamond. This was one of this "work" details as part of the UMPD. With a smile on his face, he shook my hand, slapped me on the back and wished me good luck. I will always remember him with a smile on my face. My condolences to the entire family.

January 22, 2012

You will be truly missed,! I will truly miss playing cards at Geaghan's! If it wasn't for us playing cards at Geaghan s, I would never had met all you, all of his awesome kids. If it wasn't for everything he told me, and you as well, we wouldn't be the people we are now. We have been thru so much together, each and everyone of you, that i am proud to say that he will be missed so much! I love you dearly, stay positive, call me if you need to talk, anytime. Take care, all of you!!

My sincere condolences to the family and friends of Leory....!
I was fortunate to meet Leory at age eleven. This was at Newbury Park. He, Hal Cammack, Ed Okie and myself spent many days tgether playing Hearts at his house on Frasier St. where his Mom and sister Norma would look on, watching with great delight, as we joshed each other during these card battles. Other times we could be found at Newbury Park, or Zaka Ceaser's Mkt. playing cribbage.
Our world at that time revolved around Newbury Park playing sports and frolicing in the surrounding neighborhood as best friends. What great days of innoncence and joy those where...! To anyone who spent days of growing up during those early sixties years; I'm sure they would wholeheartedly agree...!
I could recount many stories of Leory and those happy days we all spent together, but the space here is limited.
What I will say is that those friendships and memories have lasted a lifetime. What is sad to me is that due to the stress of lifes trials and tribulations, that we lose that close and intimate relationships we shared then, but never the bonded friendships we knew.
I had the oppurtinity to visit with Leory twice during his resent stay in the hospital. Our conversations would always go back to our antics of days past, and what great experiences we shared together.

Leory was an icon in sports, but more so as a friend...! His legacy is his family and numerous friends He made during his life's journey. I feel fortunate, proud, and honored to be among those on that list...! I love Leory Patterson...!!!!!!!

January 20, 2012

Thank all of you for the wonderful stories. I can't read enough of them. Please keep them coming. My Dad was my best friend as well as my father. His last days were filled with love, family, and jokes. During his years, I have struggled with alcohol and he never stopped beleiving in me! He was there as a father and friend. He never had a negative word to say about my troubles. As a matter of fact, he never had a negative word about anyone. He lived life through sports. Reffing games brought him back to the youth he so dominated at. He enjoyed watching kids play sports. He also enjoyed talking "junk" in spades. Always the most competitive person you'd ever meet. He was a young 68. He enjoyed working at UMO. If you call working all the hockey games, football and baseball games WORK, for him! lol! He so enjoyed working there for 33 years and told me countless stories at his favorite bar, Geaghans! I've been sober now for almost 2 years. That was something I needed to do when he was diagnosed with Cancer. I figured if I could be half the person he was, Id be alright. I'm glad he got to see me so happy and healthy before his passing. From my brothers; Leroy, Ryan and my twin sister Erica, we cant say thank you enough for all the condolences and people who have reached out to me and my family. Thank You! He will be missed! Keep your stories coming, please. We enjoy them!

I am so sorry to hear that Leroy has passed. When I was a kid we lived around the corner from his family. His sisters Cathy and Norma baby-sat for my sister Lenore and me.
I am happy to hear that he was a success in the sum total of his life, with kids, grandkids and people around him that carried him in their hearts.
I was one of the lucky ones (BHS 1964) who got to see him play, and win, in high school. He was so good. Those games were so great!
In the 50's and early 60's, in a community as white as Bangor, diversity had more to do with conflicts between Irish, French Canadians and occasionally Jews (my tribe). As I recall, his dad worked as a custodian in the train station (remember those). I learned a lot from my contact with the Patterson family. Their dignity and caring gave a lie to the prejudice that surrounded us.

I was 8 and Leroy was 12 when I joined Rotary East in the Bangor Little League way back when. He blasted two home runs for us on opening day, with the ball still going up as it went over the fence at Taylor Field. He repeated the performance in our next game. I also remember Leroy as not just a great basketball player at BHS, but was an entertainer as well. I have an unerasable of memeory of him arguing with a ref on the court at Bangor auditorium, holding the ball under his arm, which he was going to keep, and did, until the ref explained to him the reasoning behind what Leroy felt was an incredulous call. Leroy was always a gentleman and warm whenever I bumped into him in later years, and I am saddened by his passing.

I can remember Leroy's smile every time I saw him as a student and later when I had the opportunity to work with him at UMPD. He was always upbeat and a pleasure to work with. When Leroy got to retire I hoped he would enjoy his well deserved rest. But, as he had in law enforcement he found a new issue to deal with. I know Leroy will be looking down cheering on Maine sports. Rest in Peace Leroy, and as for Leroy's family, just think of all the people that Leroy touched during his life. He is truly blessed to have so many friends.

I met Leroy my 2nd grade yr. His son Ronnie invited me over for supper. Mr. Patterson made me feel so welcome in his home that for about the next ten years I spent a great deal of time there. Even though on a few occasions he probably should have, he never once asked me to leave. Mr. Patterson was humble yet commanding, a man of great integrity. He was also a man with a great jump shot, even though I was to young to witness Leroy's feats as a young athlete, I was lucky enough play some pig with him in the park and what I remember the most was that he never missed a shot. Mr. Patterson touched so many lives in this community from the countless students he came in contact with at the University of Maine, to all the kids in the Bangor area who grew up playing youth sports and so many others. Thanks for the many years of memories. To Ronnie, Leroy, Erica and Ryan, my deepest sympathies.
