HUNTLEY - LeRoy Wirsing, 88, of Huntley, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at his home.
He was born Nov. 27, 1916, on the family farm in Coral Township, to Alonzo and Lily (Meyer) Wirsing. He married Irene E. Kolberg on Sept. 21, 1940, in St. Charles, and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
After his service, he returned to farm in the Hampshire and Harmony areas and later worked in the excavating business for several years. He operated the Parkside Tap for nearly 10 years and retired as maintenance director of the Huntley Park District.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, playing cards and horseshoes, and especially spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Huntley, American Legion Post 673 of Huntley, and was a former member of the Harvard Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife; three grandchildren, Jeff Peterson Huntley, Jodi (Lynn) Grant of Cary and Jay Peterson of Kenosha, Wis.; two great-grandchildren, Kevin and Matthew Grant; a sister, Aletha (Bill) Seiler of Huntley; a brother, James "Pat" Wirsing of St. Germaine, Wis.; and his caregiver, Juri Kakstovs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Patricia A. Peterson on June 8, 2002; a son-in-law, Wayne Peterson on Nov. 16, 2001; and a sister, Phyllis Eickstedt.
The visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at James A. O'Connor Funeral Home, 11603 E. Main St., Huntley. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5, at First Congregational Church, 11628 E. Main St., Huntley. The Rev. Walter I. Thyng will officiate.
Burial will be in Marengo City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the First Congregational Church.
