Leslie STACKHOUSE Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Apr. 16 to Apr. 17, 2012.
STACKHOUSE, Leslie James "Les"
November 29, 1948 - April 14, 2012
Resident of Ottawa, Ontario, after a courageous battle with cancer, Les passed away peacefully at the Ottawa General Hospital. Les was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia where he graduated from the Royal Canadian Air Cadets as both a Warrant Officer and a Pilot. He moved to Ottawa in 1978 and he retired from the Federal Public Service after an amazing 40 year career. He was one of six brothers born to the late Florence and Roy Stackhouse and is predeceased by beloved friend and ex-wife Janet Stackhouse (nee Paul). Les will be forever remembered by his children Nancy, Carol-Ann and Jim and his brothers Roy, Wayne, Darrell, Harold and Gary along with countless friends and family whom were blessed to have known him. Les loved playing the guitar and vacationing south to escape the Canadian winters. The family will receive friends at McEvoy-Shields Funeral Home, 1411 Hunt Club Road (at Albion Road) on Wednesday April 18 and Thursday, April 19 from 7-9 p.m. In lieu of flowers in memoriam donations to the Hospice at May Court, 114 Cameron Ave. Ottawa, Ontario K1S 0X1 would be appreciated.

Hey Dad. You would be 72 this and what a year it is. We have a pandemic and I have been thinking about you a lot lately. Christmas was always your favourite time of the year and with the pandemic we have started decorating early. As usual and because for you there is really no other Christmas light colour other than RED we have put up red lights outside and on the wreath. You would have loved them. Miss you like crazy ...... can't believe it has been 8 years. Love you lots. Nancy

Hey Dad, it has been seven very long years since you've been gone. I miss all our conversations and yes even our arguments.....probably because we never stayed angry long. It has been difficult these past two years and I have come to realize that you were my pillar, that person always in my corner propping me up when I would otherwise fall. Love you - 'til we meet again. Nancy

Happy Father's Day Dad! Miss you more every day. So much has happened these past few years. Can't believe it has been six years now - where'd the time go.

Father'd Day is a reminder to me of all those good times we had and how much you gave to us. You did it all with no complaint and always had a smile. Miss you.....Love Nancy

Hi Dad, I miss your smile and laugh. This year is harder then previous years, not really sure why. My thoughts are with you and of mum. I'm glad you are together again, somehow that's very comforting to me. You two may not have been life long partners but you were definitely life long friends. Merry Christmas and love you always xo xo

Wow. Can not believe it has been this long. Some times it is like yesterday; others it is so far away. Happy Birthday Dad. Hope wherever you are you are doing well and happy. Fortunately time has allowed me to forget the sadness (mostly) of my lost. Time has however also allowed me to remember and be able to speak fondly and without tears the wonderful impact you made on my life. Thank you for being there always. You put your kids first never thinking about the impact to youself. Love you and as always miss you.

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad
Happy Father's Day!

You never said I'm leaving
You never said goodbye
You were gone before I knew it,
And only God knew why
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried
If Love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died
In Life I loved you dearly
In death I love you still
In my heart you hold a place,
That no one could ever fill
It broke my heart to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
For part of me went with you,
The day God took you home.

My condolences to the family. I remember Les from the McCarvill farm when we were young. I was probably the only girl that stayed at the farm (to help Grandma in the kitchen). But Les would allow me out with the boys to ride on the tractor and play in the fields, and I have always remembered him for that. Les was kind enough to reconnect with me at my dad's passing (his uncle Celes). May all of his family keep fond memories of him.

Nancy, Carol, and Jim,
I was dumbstruck when I happened across this news yesterday, after all these years. I'm still not quite sure what to say. I think of you often, every time I drive past your old neighbourhood. Even if we lost touch over the course of many moves and many years, I still miss you and your folks and the conversations we all had as teens in your kitchen.
I'm sure I can't imagine the strain you are all under now, but I would enjoy the opportunity to become reacquainted when the time is right. Let me know.

Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed, and very dear.

Peacefully sleeping, resting at last,
His weary trials and troubles past,
In silence he suffered, in patience he bore,
Till God called him home to suffer no more.

To the Family of Les ,
I am saddened that Les has passed at such an early age. I worked with Les for many years up until his retirement. I first met him in the early nineties on a phone call he made to congratulate me for singlehandedly causing a system crash. Although his mannerism was at first gruff he was unable to keep that demeanor for long. It was obvious to me that underneath was someone with a good heart and a great sense of humour. I enjoyed all our conversations together over the next 16 years and he was a very funny guy indeed . He will be remembered well. My condolences to all of you on your loss.

The legacy of six siblings, all male, spread from Nova Scotia to British Columbia has come to an untimely end. The five other brothers have sadly lost Leslie, the fourth born in a uniquely gendered family. Our paths have gone in many diverse directions through the years. Time has passed quickly with no thought there would ever be a a time with less than six brothers. But there is no constant in life, so with deep regret I say good-bye to my brother Leslie. Love, Roy

Dear Carol, Nancy, Jim : I wish to thank Carol for letting me know of the great loss of your father (and my dearest friend) Les. I first met Les when we both worked at Department of Supply and Services, in the Ralston Building in Halifax. Les became a close colleague and my Vice President of Union Local 80019 DSS Component of the PSAC. Later , I had the pleasure and honour, of having Les as one of my employees when I became a Pay Unit Supervisor. Les made my job much easier. After I left DSS, Les and I kept in touch , and Les was deservingly promoted to my previous job at DSS and then shortly after that, Les was again promoted when he was chosen by Head Office ( Ottawa) to be A Senior Officer in their Computer Pay Operation. Les and I shared some good times together, and then some tragedies as we both lost our wives to cancer .I will always remember Les as the best friend one could ever have. Les was always proud of , and loved, his children, Carol, Nancy and Jimmy ( and his late wife Janet .)
