Lewis T. Hubbs passed away Thursday, July 28, 2016 at home in Gladwin. He was born in Glenside, PA on Sept. 24, 1923 to Lewis T. and Mary (Hainsworth) Hubbs.
Lewis grew up at the Masonic Home in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania and attended Patton High School where he learned the trade of carpentry. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Navy in Philadelphia in December 1942. He was eventually put into officer's training and attended several universities including: University of South Carolina, Milligan College in Tennessee, Central Michigan University, and the University of Michigan, where he graduated with a B.B.A. from the business school. The same day, Lewis graduated with his Naval Commission with the rank of Ensign.
Lewis met Dorothy Ward at CMU and they both attended the University of Michigan. On Aug.13, 1949 they were married in Gladwin. At this time Lewis was working for International Harvester in Saginaw.
When Frank E. Ward died, Lewis returned to Gladwin to oversee The Frank E. Ward Co. lumberyard and hardware. He also became involved in politics and at one time was chairman of the Gladwin Republican Party, and remained a lifelong Republican.
When the State of Michigan decided to rewrite the State's Constitution, Lewis ran from the then 28th Senatorial District that served ten counties. He served as a delegate in Lansing at the State Constitutional Convention from 1960 to 1961. He attended the 50th Reunion of the convention delegates in 2011 where the Chief Justice of the Michigan Supreme Court said that it was an honor to work with one of the best state constitutions in the United States.
In 1963, Lewis was hired by Merrill Lynch and attended their brokerage school in New York at the Stock Exchange. He retired from Merrill Lynch in 1966 after 33 years.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years Dorothy E. (Ward), two daughters Priscilla Hubbs Szerdi of Gladwin and Susan Hubbs of St. Cloud, Minnesota. His son-in-law Andrew W. Szerdi IV of Gladwin, and grandchildren: Andrew W. Szerdi V of Melvindale, MI, Lewis K. Szerdi of Gladwin, AC2 Taylor H. Szerdi, U.S.S. Nimitz, Bremerton, Washington, Elizabeth Motin of St. Michael, Minnesota, and Emily Motin of Elk River, Minnesota. A sister, Mary Anne Goodwin of Easley, South Carolina.
Lewis was preceded in death by his parents Mary and Lewis Hubbs, brothers and sister: John Walsh, James Koder Walsh, Ruby Walsh, Harry Hubbs, and Charles Hubbs.
Family will greet friends Thursday, Aug. 11 from 3-8 p.m. at Sisson Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, Aug. 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 211 East Cedar Avenue, Gladwin, MI 48624 with the Reverend J. Thomas Downs officiating.
Memorials in honor of Lewis' life may be given to St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Gladwin Masonic Lodge.
