Reading "Harper's" magazine, reading his books of collections of essays. I admired his writing style and his historical allusions, especially comparing our modern wealthy society to the ancien regime, showing that human vanity is ever present . One of the essays I particularly liked was the one where he wrote that we often dislike or admire people that we have never met and really will probably never know. Saw him speak at the University of South Florida many years ago. A writer in the spirit of Mark Twain and H. L. Mencken.

A dedicated editor that worked hard to make Harper's the great magazine that it is. Under his direction, the magazine continued to flourish. Sincerest condolences to the Lapham family, so very sorry for your loss. May God be with you as you endure this very difficult time of your loss.
