Lewis M. Powell

Lewis M. Powell, 81, husband of Nancy M. Bender, Schwenksville, PA, died on Monday, September 1, 2025, at St. Luke's Hospital - Grand View Campus, Sellersville, PA.

Lewis was born on June 23, 1944, in Asheville, NC, to the late Thomas E. and Myrtle I. (Thurston) Powell. He graduated from Stamford (CT) High School and then earned his BA in English and an M.Ed.

from Penn State University.

Before retiring in 2004, Lewis was on staff with the Pennsylvania State Education Association as a Uniserv Representative serving teachers in Montgomery and Bucks County for 33 years. He previously taught with the Upper Merion School District.

Lewis moved to an 1807 stone farmhouse in Schwenksville in 1972, which he restored, gardening and keeping chickens for many years. He was actively involved in the community through local service organizations and municipal roles. Throughout the years, he cultivated a deep love of American history and could always be found with multiple history books on his side table.

He loved spending time in Maine, where he summered for many years. He took joy in visiting his grandchildren when they lived on an island there.

In addition to his wife of 45 years, Lewis is survived by his sons, Rev. Thomas M., husband of Rebecca (Doster) Powell, Mechanicsburg, PA, and Robert T. Powell, Schwenksville; his grandchildren, Lewis, Padraig, and Brigid Powell; and his sister, Beverly Powell, Allentown.

A memorial service for Lewis will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, September 5th, in the Good Shepherd Mausoleum Chapel, Limerick Garden of Memories, 44 E. Arcadia Dr., Limerick, PA 19468, with the Rev. Greg O'Brien, Pastor, Christ Church, Orthodox Presbyterian Church, Downingtown, PA, officiating. Friends may call from 10:00 to 11:00 AM, Friday, in the chapel. A luncheon will follow at the Copperfield Inn at Lakeside, Limerick.
