Louis "Lexy" DeCray Loewenstein

May 23, 1962 - July 1, 2025

Louis "Lexy" DeCray Loewenstein passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 1, 2025, in San Francisco, California. He was 63 years old.

He was born in New York City on May 23, 1962. When he was two years old his family moved to San Francisco, where he grew up. Lexy lived a rich and wholehearted life defined by curiosity, adventure, and resilience. He earned his BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and during that time spent a year abroad at University College London. He also earned an MBA from the University of San Francisco.

Lexy was a passionate photographer whose work was recognized in multiple competitions. He was also an enthusiastic endurance athlete, completing four full marathons in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, as well as proudly walking the London Marathon in 2023. On the slopes, he earned numerous Nastar ski racing medals-skiing was his favorite sport and one of his lifelong passions. He had a deep love for the outdoors, and especially cherished hiking in the mountains of Colorado-a place that brought him peace, clarity, and joy.

He had an incredible social network and a genuine gift for connecting people. Whether among friends or strangers, he was a natural bridge-builder who brought others together with warmth, humor, and generosity. Throughout his life, he was dedicated to outreach and fundraising efforts for organizations and institutions close to his heart.

But more than any of his accomplishments, Lexy's greatest joy was being a father. His favorite thing in life was spending time with his son, Levi. He rarely missed a school program or sports game, always choosing fatherhood above all else. Whether cheering from the sidelines or supporting from behind the scenes, Lexy's love for his son was steady, selfless, and deeply proud.

In 2022, Lexy was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer-despite being a lifelong non-smoker. He faced his illness with extraordinary courage, grace, and tenacity, continuing to live with purpose and love during his three-year journey.

Lexy is survived by his partner of nineteen years and wife, Trela Caler; his son Levi Loewenstein; and his sister, Lael Loewenstein of Santa Monica, California, and Donna Carter of Massachusetts. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marcella DeCray, and his father, Louis Klee Loewenstein.

His insatiable curiosity, adventurous spirit, and sentimental heart left an enduring impact on everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 17th at 11:00 AM at the Presidio Golf Course Clubhouse in San Francisco. Bites and beverages will follow.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family welcomes donations in Lexy's memory to GO2 for Lung Cancer at go2.org.

I am saddened by Lexi´s passing, as I had talked with him only a couple months before , and he was so courageous and determined to triumph. We met in the late 80´s, volunteering together on a fundraiser at Fort Mason for the American Cancer Society. It was always a pleasure to cross paths, unexpectedly, and catch up over the decades. I extend my best wish to Lexi´s loved ones for comfort and peace as you grieve your loss, which is the devastating price for love.
My memories of Lexi shall forever sleep in my heart.

Rest in peace, Lexy. Thanks for the memories as a Chi Phi brother, roommate, and Cal fan. Thanks for your friendship, celebrations, the beat-up Mazda, and other kind generosities.

Lexy was always kind to me when I would run into him so this news was sad for me to hear. I do remember how happy he was when he told me his wife was expecting. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Lexy was so simple, humble, and so nice.

Heartbreaking ... I knew Lexi from Intramural sports at USF, of all things (some 35 years ago ..). I would run into him periodically even after we moved out of the City. He always went out of his way to be gracious and friendly. RIP

I was so sad to see on Facebook that my old Cal friend Lexy had passed. We lived in neighboring fraternities and became friends in college and reconnected maybe a decade ago. I enjoyed attending Cal sporting events with him. He delighted in being able to take his son to games as well.
Always the inquisitive he was a pleasure to speak with and share viewpoints on life. We lost touch during the pandemic and I had no idea that he was sick. May his memory be a blessing to his family and many friends. Go Bears!

I last saw Lexi at our college fraternity's annual Russian River canoe trip a year ago, and we compared notes on the indignities of aging . I'll echo what others have said - his incessant questions (tempered a bit as he grew...) were the obverse of a bright spirit of inquiry. He was good company indeed, May His Memory Be As A Blessing, and may all that mourn be comforted.

As my Chi Phi brother Gary Jones remarked, Lexy always had a question. Put another way, he possessed an insatiable appetite for knowledge. We always enjoyed our conversatons centering around San Francisco trivia and bon mots. Rest in peace, my Chi Phi brother!

I am so sad to hear of Lexy´s passing. We met in a yoga class way back when I lived in SF. Although I moved back east, he would periodically say hello on Facebook, like when my baby was born the same year as his. I always enjoyed hearing from him and those brief, but meaningful exchanges about life and being a parent.

I am so sorry to have read about Lexi`s passing today on Facebook and here in his obituary. I knew Lexi at our dorm at UCL in London in our junior year (1982-83) as one of a few Americans in that compound. He was always so fun and kind and we often had dinner together in the dining hall. We reconnected on Facebook many years later. Rest in peace, old friend.

I am deeply saddened and shocked to learn this news. Lexy and I grew up a block apart and from early childhood were regulars on the slopes at Squaw Valley. As a young man, my father started a business called Mogul Ski Club, which brought kids 8-18 to Squaw for weekend skiing; Lexy participated and used to reminisce about this and his great love of Squaw. As adults, he and I ended up living back in the neighborhood of our youth. We would see each other from time to time, whether at Peet´s/Laurel Village or otherwise. As others have observed, he had a relentlessly sunny outlook and was endlessly curious about things. He was a great curator of San Francisco and neighborhood history, and always looking to make connections with and for others, and to devise ways to make the city better. I have a strong sense of just how devoted he was as a father, husband and uncle. I had no idea that Lexy had been ill. I will miss him and his benevolent presence around these streets. My most sincere condolences to all his family and friends. May Lexy rest in peace.

I am so incredibly sad and shocked by this news. I met Lexy in L9ndon when he was at UCL and we were in the same halls of residence. He was always so full of fun with a zest for life. We kept in touch with sporadic contact, but it was always a joy to hear from him. He even visited my home in Wales and stayed with us at my mum's house. A Gentle fun soul who was taken far too soon. My condolences to all his family and those who loved him.
With love from Janine (nee Falber) and Gary Edwards.

He reached out to me a few years ago to say hi and we followed each other on Facebook. Rest in peace Lexy and I´m sure you are skiing in Heaven now!
