Linda Grundhoffer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 4, 2024.
Linda was born to David Nathan and Maxine Nash Carey on January 7, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri. Her father was in the Navy, and her mother was a high school teacher and counselor. David was stationed at Alameda Air Station in the early 50s, so the family moved to California. After moving back and forth between Missouri and California several times, Linda graduated from Arroyo High School, San Lorenzo, CA. She spent two years at Colorado State University, Fort Collins. One of her first jobs was with Castle and Cooke in the computer division, first assigned to the Denver office and then to the Seattle office. When Boeing shut down in 1971 so did the computer division, so Linda interviewed for a job at Monte Vista High School in Danville, CA. That was the beginning of her long career in education and where she met her husband Jerry. Jerry had never been out of the state of California when they married in 1972, so their honeymoon was in Bermuda. From that day until Jerry's passing in 2000, they traveled somewhere in the world every year. After Jerry's death, Linda's career boomed and she spent the next 23 years as a CBO in several districts, a State appointed Trustee in West Contra Costa Unified and South Monterey Joint Union High School Districts, and a consultant to several other districts around the state. She loved mentoring new business personnel and trying to make processes easier for districts. Her bug for travel did not stop, as she and her beloved step-daughter, Lisa, made several global trips together over those years. In 2019, she became the Treasurer of the Eugene O'Neill Foundation, Tao House in Danville to fulfill her desire to volunteer for a good cause. She was preceded in death by her husband Jerry in 2000, her father, David, in 2015 and her mother, Maxine, in 2018. She is survived by her brother James Carey of Liberty, Missouri and her step-daughter Lisa and her husband Tony of Napa, California, as well as many family members in the Kansas City, Missouri area.

Linda's smile, calm demeanor and faith in the goodness of people will be missed. Linda had many favorite charities but specifically asked that donations go to Hospice of the East Bay, the Eugene O'Neill Foundation - Artist in Residence program, or to any food bank in your area.

I have fond memories of Linda. She was always so genuine and personable. I met her when I was working on a study atOakland. Linda moved on to serving with many other agencies to support school districts to get back on the right financial track. Very respected though-out educational leaders. Miss you girl.

I was a school administrator in San Ramon where I met her husband Jerry. Whenever I was with them I marveled at their relationship and definitely remember all the laughs we shared

I met Linda for the first time about 23 years ago in a conference room in the Oakland Unified School District. We became good friends from that time forward. She truly was at the top of the profession of California School District Finance. More than that, she was hilarious! I will truly miss her.
