Lisa Riney Obituary

Published by Houston Chronicle on Mar. 5, 2023.
Lisa Michelle (Maronick) Riney
02/05/1960 - 02/28/2023
Lisa Riney, 63, of Houston Texas, passed away February 28, 2023 with Steve Riney, her loving husband of 39 years and their four sons, by her side.

Lisa was born February 5, 1960 in Great Falls, Montana. After graduating from C.M. Russell High School, Lisa attended the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon and later transferred to Saint Mary's College in South Bend, Indiana. She was a competitive diver in her youth and continued to compete as a member of the diving team at both schools. It was at Saint Mary's where she met, and was later engaged to the love of her life. Lisa graduated from Saint Mary's in 1983.

Lisa and Steve married June 16, 1984 in Great Falls, Montana. They began their married life in Owensboro, Kentucky where Lisa began a career as a micro-biologist. In 1989, when their first son Alex was born, she chose motherhood over a career as she strongly believed that raising her children was her most important calling in life. Lisa was a devoted wife and mother while supporting Steve in his career aspirations.

Lisa was also a steadfast follower of Jesus Christ. Her Christian faith guided her marriage, her mothering and her many friendships. Lisa cherished her faith, sharing it with many through life's encounters. Her faith also served as a strong foundation throughout her long journey with cancer. She maintained an unwavering confidence in the promise of Romans 8:28 "….that in all things, God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." Lisa was a member of Houston's First Baptist Church and the Third Quarter life bible study class.

Lisa's four boys were her pride and joy. She loved nothing more than spending quality time with each of them. Lisa was always there for them….oh, how she loved her boys. One of her favorite pastimes was watching Notre Dame football with her family. She was a devoted Irish fan. In addition to raising 4 incredible sons….she had a knack for raising and training the family dogs. The dogs loved Lisa.

Lisa is pre-deceased by her son William Riney (miscarriage) and her father Bill Maronick. Lisa leaves behind her loving husband, Steve, four sons, Alex (Ellie) Riney of Houston; Kevin (Emily) Riney of Houston; Ben Riney of Houston; Jeff Riney of Washington, DC; her mother, Pat Maronick of Great Falls, Montana; two sisters, Sheryll Lashway of Great Falls, Montana and Deborah (James) Smedsrud of Red Lodge, Montana; and her brother Gregory (Audrey) Maronick of Camas, Washington. Lisa, "Gigi", is also survived by her precious grandkids Rylee and Sophie Riney (Alex) and Reagan and William Riney (Kevin), as well as many additional relatives.

A celebration of Lisa's life will be held at Houston's First Baptist Church Loop Campus, at 7401 Katy Freeway, on Thursday, March 9, 2023 at 11:00am. A reception will immediately follow. The service will also be live-streamed. Go to https://houstonsfirst.org/the-loop. Click on Sunday Toolkit and then click on Church Online.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that expressions of sympathy be made to a breast cancer research organization of your choosing.

"Friends come and friends go, But there is a [true, loving] friend who [is reliable and] sticks closer than a "sister"." Proverbs 18:24

I am missing Lisa today and I will miss her always. I will miss her presence, our talks, laughter, cries, the way we keep each other focus on the BIG picture through the different seasons of our lives, how we ALWAYS relied on each other to see God working in every situation. The encouraging text messages, lunches, and couples dinner.
I miss my best friend. I have many friends that I love, but with Lisa I KNEW that she would make our time together a priority, she always made me feel special and loved, I always felt like I was her favorite friend in the world. She knew that I loved her too, and that made our friendship flourish through the years. It was unselfish and freely, not at all demanding. We treasure each other.
We talk about everything, and encouraged each other through the difficult times.
She was so proud of her "boys", she would do anything for them, she cheer for them and support them even in times when she didn´t agree much with their choices. She would pick a fight with anyone to defend her cubs.
How beautiful was her love for Steve, she was his supporter, cheer leader and encourager. She knew in her core that he would do anything for her.
You will indeed be missed my friend.
I know where you are and that is what gives me comfort. I love you so much that I will never even think to wish you be back from there. Time doesn´t matter for you anymore so I will see you soon, start searching for the best restaurants in heaven for us to meet and maybe have a glass of that awesome wine that only Jesus can make.

Lisa was the most genuine person and friend I´ve ever known. She never put on airs or had hidden agendas. She was Loving, caring, kind, giving, tireless, strong, gentle, active, encouraging, FUN and 100 other wonderful things. Even though she was very private and protecting, she only did so appropriately and out of concern for others. She wanted to always help and never burden others. She had an ability to sense what a person could handle and what they could not. She somehow instinctively knew each person´s, individual, "too much information" level. I imagine that she would be super embarrassed to read the positive things I am and others are writing about her, but she would also receive it and be grateful for it. I don´t know whom to credit for the saying: "people won´t remember you for what you did. They remember you for how you made them feel." Lisa made everyone who crossed her path feel valued or at the very least listened to or recognized - her family most of all. The world will be less because Lisa´s not in it. We will ALL miss her. We are all a little better for having known Lisa. To my friend Lisa: Looking forward to the day we both sit at Jesus´ feet together in heaven and (as we used to laugh about together many years ago) we´ll "probably be a little Martha and a little Mary and swap recipes or organize the angels."

Lisa will be so so missed! She was the dearest friend, one who showed up for the good and the hard in others lives. She was also full of life, with a laugh I will never be able to forget. She was full of spunk! Yet also compassionate, understanding, honest, and a woman of Great Faith ! It is hard for me to beloved she is gone , she is a friend I thought I would grow old with. I will miss her every day and in so many ways.

Lisa was such a beautiful person and I admired her so much. I always loved our visits while our sons were in scouts together and looked to her as a role model while raising my own sons. May precious memories bring comfort and smiles to you all.
