Tom & Mary Hamakawa

Mary & I have known Lloyd for almost 40 years and have had the pleasure of meeting a large number of his friends and family during these years. Reading the many comments from his family and his many associates from his memorable days at the Burnaby Arts Centre certainly highlights for us the many wonderful qualities Lloyd exemplified. Lloyd shared with us his great love and affection for his wife Alice, his daughter Jen, his two grandsons Omar & Ally, and his great-grandson Cosmo. Lloyd will be sorely missed by all of us.

I knew "Uncle Lloyd" as a very young girl, because he and Winona and my father and mother were fast friends from the old Allied Arts centre days back in Calgary. My father and Lloyd both could spin stories that inspired imaginations and Lloyd went on to develop his talents further with his acting career. When Alice entered the stage, we all grew to love her dearly. My parents were especially close with her family: Mamasan, Papasan, and brothers Tommy and Dick. Lloyd was a very lucky man surrounded by wonderful family and friends. Rest in peace Uncle Lloyd!

I met lloyd at the Calgary Allied Arts Centre in the early sixties. I was the stage manager there and reported to him. We became dear friends not only with Winona at the time but also with dear Alice. For more than 50 years we kept in contact with each other whether it was from Calgary, Holland, the Mediterranean, Richmond or Vancouver Island. Lloyd and Alice were and are our dearest friends. Last September I lost my wife Mary after 56 years of marriage and now my PAL Lloyd. Lucky for me, we still have Alice who looked after Lloyd like a Florence Nightingale. We are going to miss him but we find joy in the splendid memories we have of him. I know that in that theatre in the sky he will attract audiences with his performances and maybe just maybe my Mary is in attendance to start the applause. I can hear the roar down here already together with his infectious smile. Rest my friend peacefully you deserve it after such a long and happy life.

Just a brief note to add to previous entries by Arts Centre staff about our dear Lloyd. Beyond the numerous ways he contributed to the arts, Lloyd led his staff by allowing us to take risks and showing us that real commitment and hard work are even more effective when a good laugh is part of the mix. He was a bright man of many passions. I have enjoyed seeing how happy Lloyd's grandsons and great-grandson have made him these past years and relieved that he had Alice to help him through the rough bits along the way and right to the end. Here's to you, Lloyd! Rest in peace.

Lloyd was an inspiration to all of us at the Burnaby Arts Centre (now Shadbolt Centre for the Arts). He was a fearless warrior in advocating for the arts and supporting the staff. At the same time, he carried on his acting career, and we enjoyed his tales of the films and theatre projects he worked on. I will miss his genial personality and his big booming laugh! I offer my condolences to his family and friends, and especially Alice who was his angel all those years and has had such a positive outlook and been his loving partner in life.

I did not know Lloyd well but heard many stories from my Aunt Alice and was very fortunate to spend an afternoon with him a year ago. He was a real gentleman, a true artist, something which has been been continued down through the generations, courageous in his struggles with his health and had a good sense of humour. I wish I had had more time to get to know him but space and time did not cooperate. My love and condolences to my aunt, Alice. I hope that you bask in the glory of many good memories of your life together. Butterball.

Lloyd will be missed but I will always hold my memories of him close to my heart. I did not realize Lloyd was 90 as even now I think of him being exactly as he was at the Burnaby Arts Centre: always an inspiration; always passionate about developing quality arts experiences for people of all ages; never wavering from his vision and inspiring his staff to do the same. Lloyd inspired me and encouraged my passion for creating arts opportunities for people of all ages. I believe the Shadbolt Centre for The Arts (formerly the Burnaby Arts Centre) is a legacy to Lloyd because of the seeds he sowed. He loved his staff. His vision still informs how I am inspired by the arts. He was a gem, one of a kind. My thoughts are with Alice, Jennifer & his family.

A great friend of over 40 years, always had a great story and lots of body language telling it. I will miss your ornery old self. xx Gisele, Ken, Colin and Sean Nelsen.

My Dad. Where do I start? I have so many memories and so much to be grateful for. When I was four I wanted a Mail Box for Christmas so he made me one!! Of all things! He introduced me to a love of the stars and we used to gaze up at them when we lived in Boundary Bay. That was a wonderful time living there. Dad and I would go out at low tide with Mike our cocker spaniel and catch crabs and then have a feast later. This was often shared with our friends and family. I inherited his love of maps and ended up travelling the world a bit. My mother, Winona, who died in 2011, knew Dad from their childhood in Winnipeg. They were married for 15 years and were very loving parents to me. I was introduced to the theatre at a very early age and he would call me his little critic. He used to practise his lines with me and I still love the theatre.
Of course he spent 39 years with Alice, his companion, wife and devoted carer. She has been a wonderful support to him in every way and cared for him amazingly well right to his peaceful end.
Dad was very proud of his two grandsons who have followed him into the Arts. Omar studied Fine Art and now is completing a course in set construction. Ally did a Media degree and is now doing film editing and production and is successful with this.
Even his great grandson Cosmo has been in a couple of short films and he is only two!!
Dad and Alice had a wonderful trip to Tanzania when we lived there in the late 90's and he was thrilled to see the variety of wildlife there.
My Dad and I lived a long way from each other for most of my life but this did not diminish our closeness. It was very deep and beyond words. I also am very close to Alice and we all love her very much.
Dad, I love you. You're in the "corral in the clouds" now as you said the last time we were together. Rest in peace.

One of a kind! A friend that always had your back and would be there when and where you needed him to be. We worked together in the entertainment business both on the boards and in the board rooms. He encouraged and supported other performers to excel and was always there to congratulate them when they did. He also worked tirelessly on behalf of the performers, particularly in Western Canada and I will miss him and the performing industry will miss him.
One cannot speak of Lloyd without speaking of Alice and the incredable support and love she gave LLoyd throughout their marriage.
I will not only miss you my friend but it will be difficult knowing that you are not there anymore but please know that I've got your back.

My Uncle Lloyd was a special person in my life. Although he was 8 years younger than my mother, they were very close and remained that way until her death. He spoke beautifully at her funerall, a memory that I will always treasure. He also spoke at my wedding, a thoughtful and touching speech that I will always remember. He was a talented man and a wonderful actor. Soem of my favourite memories involved watching him in plays at the little theatre in Marpole when I was a child. Our days out at Boundary Bay were so much fun, lunching at Pop's and walking the beach downt to the store in Pt. Roberts. We had times where we didn't see each other as much but we always stayed in touch. He was a sweet and loving man, a great father to Jen, devoted partner to Alice, and much loved Grandfather by Omar and Ally. How wonderful it was that he lived to see a great grandson be born, his precious Cosmo. He will be greatly missed by us all.
