Lloyd Donovan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 2, 2014.
John Lloyd Donovan
Aug. 19, 1948 – Aug. 1, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lloyd Donovan who lost his battle with cancer late Friday evening. Lloyd was surrounded by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.
Lloyd was a successful entrepreneur and a tireless advocate for the community of Ingonish that he called home for all of his 65 years. He was employed as a manager for Rona and managed the Ingonish store for many years. Lloyd created and successfully operated Ingonish Contracting, with his wife Vi, that was a mainstay in the community for decades. He also worked as part of the Joneljim Investment team and he was the owner of Donovan's Building Supplies.
Lloyd's expertise and knowledge in the field of contracting and building supplies was second to none. He had exceptional business knowledge and judgment that earned him the respect of all those with whom he worked.
Lloyd was an avid sportsman and was devoted to golf both as a player and as the president of the Highland Golf Club Society. He participated in and oversaw many tournaments over the years and was dedicated to the development of the golf club for the community. Lloyd was also actively involved in Cape Smokey Ski Club and the Canada Games as he saw the value in involving youth in sport. He also enjoyed reading and listening to music and was a true Boston Bruins fan. This lead to the fun loving competition he had with his grandson every time the Bruins or Senators were on TV.
Born in Neil's Harbour, Lloyd was the son of the late John Michael 'Jack' and Mabel (Oliver) Donovan.
Lloyd was also predeceased by his sister, Jean, brother, Michael, brother-in-law, Wayne MacGibbon, his father-in-law, Johnnie Nolan and his nephew, Kenneth Paul Nolan.
Left to mourn is his wife, Vi (Nolan) Donovan; his son, Brian (Leah) Donovan and his two grandchildren who he adored, Aiden and Allie. His sister, Camilla MacGibbon; brother, Vince (Judy) Donovan; sister-in-law, Maisie (Bob) Weeks; niece, Jeannie (Gordon) Marsh and nephews, Wayne (Connie) MacGiboon, Bruce (Belinda) MacGibbon, Blair (Allison) Donovan, Ricky (Leanne) Donovan, Robbie (Jean) Donovan, Shawn Donovan, Andre (Carolyn) Pupulin, Kevin Nolan, Charles Nolan and Daniel Nolan. Lloyd will be sadly missed by his family on the hill especially his mother-in-law, Edie Nolan; sister- in-law, Karen Pupulin; brothers-in-law, Richard (Sandra) Nolan, Bobby (Ruth Anne) Nolan and also his many, many friends both near and far.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Lloyd's memory to the North of Smokey Palliative Care Society, Buchanan Memorial Hospital Foundation or St. John's Anglican Church Memorial Fund.
Lloyd's family would like to extend a very special thank you to the nursing staff and doctors at Buchanan Memorial Hospital who showed so much compassion and support to both Lloyd and his family in their time of need.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, Aug 7 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Fillmore & Whitman Funeral Home in Ingonish. A funeral service will be held on Friday, Aug. 8 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Anglican Church, Rev. Carolyn Sharpe will officiate. Interment in parish cemetery. Reception to follow at St. John's Hall.

So sad to hear of Lloyds passing. Having grown up with Bobbie Lloyd was always around as I grew up. Sorry for your loss such a great man.

Lloyd embraced our family as we became homeowners in Ingonish 15 years ago. He cared about us as a family, not just as
"clients". The Bird family will miss him.

I have only known Lloyd for the past seven years, he was a remarkable man. From the first time we meet we were friends. It was great to travel with Lloyd, he loved to have fun. He has a large amount of my money pinned to his wall from the many golf games we played. The Christmas parties in Sydney were always the best. Thanks for the great friendship, rest in peace my friend. Glenn and Yvette Langille, Middleton N.S.

Camilla and Vince My heart is heavy with sadness for you. We all grew up more like sisters and brothers and I'm sure our neighbours didn't know whose kids belonged to who. I know my dad was quite confused at times. We may be cousins, however, will always be like sister and brother. Love you. Vi, Brian and family: Lloyd is now free of pain and will always be with you. Lloyd you were so loved, admired and respected - What a truly beautiful legacy to leave with your family and friends. Rest in peace Lloyd. With much love.

Words can not express our deep sadness on the loss of our dear friend Lloyd. Ron and I have know Lloyd for over 50 years and will miss him immensely. We are so pleased that we have wonderful memories from the time we were able to spend with him a couple of weeks ago Lloyd was a well respected businessman and an amazing friend to so many people-he was always available to answer any questions and assist in any way he could. He was instrumental in helping us set up our summer business in Ingonish many years ago. Our sincere sympathy to Vi, Brian, Camilla, Vince and their Families as well as all the Nolan Family-Lloyd was one of a kind and Ingonish has lost a very special citizen and friend

Dear Brian and Leah,
I am so sorry to learn about the loss of your Dad...I know he was very supportive when you both were starting out in your new home in Tantallon and would take on many a project. I am sure the past few years having you both living so much closer was something both he and the grandchildren cherished. Earle and I are sending our love across the miles at this sad time.

He was a very kind man. I coached for many years and when our teams were fundraising he never hesitated to donate whatever we needed. "Anything for the Kids" was always the response. Each time I would come into the store there was always a smile or friendly chat. I will miss that. Goodbye to a great person.
