First and foremost, I was so honored to meet her. I will perhaps be redundant, but what an intelligent and kind woman. She and I became "buddies" during the 1994 "Legends/Old Timers" trip on the Colorado River. I always smile when I think about how she would pack her gear early and sit quietly in one of the Dories. She was cheated by having to walk some of the rapids in 1938 (Norm Nevills as boatman). We joked that she wanted the "E ticket" to use Disneyland parlance. I rowed a Dory, my one and only time, through the Parashant ripple with Lois in the boat. I did a little high side and thought, "I cannot flip this boat with Lois in it." She was 80! I never tried that again. Lois and I exchanged holiday news for many, many years. She loved her family and her garden. She touched my heart in many ways. As the retired Head of Special Collections and Archives at Cline Library, Northern Arizona University, allow me to say that her legacy lives on through her archival collection. Karen J. Underhill

Dr. Lois Cutter was a great influence and inspiration for me as a student at UNCG. She was also a marvelous personal friend to my husband and me when we lived in Greensboro. Our condolence to Ann for her loss. We cherish fond memories of working in the Cutter home garden.

A formal message of remembrance on behalf of the Cline Library at Northern Arizona will be forthcoming; however, I, too, spent treasured time with Lois on the 1994 Colorado River trip. She proved to be a true gift on many fronts. Lois shared hilarious stories, politely settled in one of the dories early each morning to ensure a spot for the big ride in the rapids, graciously consented to an on-river oral history interview, and responded with a smile to the incessant questions from us "youngsters." I enjoyed exchanging holiday greetings for many years after our river experience. We are honored to serve as the home for a piece of Lois's legacy. Here is a link for those who would like to explore the portions of her archival collection available online at the Cline Library: http://archive.library.nau.edu/cdm/search/searchterm/Cutter,%20Lois%20Jotter/mode/exact

My thoughts to all of Lois' family on her passing. I was fortunate enough to accompany Lois on her 1994 Colorado River trip thru Grand Canyon - what a joyous woman. I will remember her fondly.

Ann,
Please accept my condolences in the death of your mother. We played bridge together for many years and always enjoyed her company. She was always my "go to" for plant information.
