Lois Hutchinson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 9, 2023.
Lois Ann Hutchinson (née Lackey) of Upper St. Clair, PA, died peacefully on September 9th, 2023, one day shy of her 96th birthday.

Lois is survived by her brother Jim (Sally) Lackey, son Bill (Allyn), daughter Nancy (Bud) Bell, granddaughter Hiedi (Roddy), grandson Eric, and great-granddaughters Abigail and Emily. Her loving husband, Lt. Col. William Kinsey "Bill" Hutchinson II, and son Steve (Janice) preceded her in death.

Lois was born on September 10th, 1927, in Carlisle, PA, to Raymond Benjamin Lackey and Anna Belle Lackey Gilmore, née Ritter. She graduated from Albright College in Reading, PA, where she met the love of her life, Bill. In 1950, after Bill's graduation, they married. Returning from their honeymoon, they found a note on their door calling Bill into active duty in Korea. Lois remained in Carlisle, where she had their first son. Upon Bill's return, their family grew, adding a son and daughter. They were stationed at Air Force bases in the US, Tokyo, Japan, and Naples, Italy.

In 1966, while Lois was on a Christmas shopping trip in Florence, Italy, she witnessed and survived the worst flood to hit the city in over 400 years. Numerous papers published her first-hand account of the Great Flood of Florence.

After returning from Italy, they were stationed in Ohio and outside Washington, DC, where Bill retired, accepting a job in Pittsburgh, and later transferred to Fountain Valley, CA, where they lived for over thirty years. They were involved in Bonsai and Suiseki clubs and loved playing golf. Lois and Bill returned to Pennsylvania to be near their daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Bud Bell, and were members of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mt. Lebanon, PA.

Lois is remembered as a kind, enduring, and driven individual who encouraged her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughters to be creative and pursue their dreams and goals. She will be interred at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies to be reunited with Bill. No funeral nor memorial service is immediately planned. The family would like to thank the staff of Gallagher HHS and Friendship Village of South Hills, Upper St. Clair, PA, for their care and support over the years.

God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I am Jean, the oldest of Lois' cousins who lived just down the street. Lois was nine years older than I and I remember how she used to take me and my sister Mary Lou to play at the Franklin school playground. I also was blessed to inherit her small two wheel bike, and many nice clothes and several formal gowns that in those days we had to wear when singing on stage with the school choir and to the junior and senior proms. Some of these got passed on down to Mary and our two younger sisters, Nancy and Doris. Thanks, Lois!

Bill were two of my favorite people during the time they attended St Wilfrids Church. Love the fine work Bill did in stained glass windows and Many dinners at their home over the years. God Bless you Lois.
