Lois Read Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2024.
Lois Fay Read of Wallingford passed away peacefully on August 27, 2024. She is the daughter of Edward and Ruth Meltzer. At age 98 (and a half!) Lois was well–loved and respected by her family and countless friends. She is survived by her children Robin Keating (James), Christopher Read (Holly), Mark Read (Kathy), Jody MacManus, and Wendy Cusick (John); including 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 6 great-great grandchildren and predeceased by her sister Marge and brother Warren.

Lois was born in 1926 and grew up in Chicago, Illinois where her intense interest and love of art began. She continued her education to receive her bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and her master's degree from Wesleyan University while raising her five children. After substitute teaching, she secured a position at Hopkins School of New Haven as the head of the Art department, art and art history teacher, and advisor. She retired from teaching to go on to study and write poetry. She lived between Wallingford, Connecticut, and San Miquel de Allende in Mexico for over thirty years, continuing with her poetry and painting.

While raising her family, Lois knit, sewed, gardened, canned fruits and vegetables, and taught school. She was also an avid world traveler. Her love of art and intrigue with world cultures led her on many adventures around the globe. Lois was a strong-willed, intelligent, well-read woman, devoted to her friends and family.

A memorial service at the Trinity Church in New Haven, CT will be held Saturday, November 30, 2024 at 10:00 am. In addition, a celebration of her life will be held at Ashlar Village in Wallingford, CT Friday, December 6, 2024, at 1:00 pm. In memorial, the family requests, instead of flowers, to plant at tree in her memory by visiting the Sympathy Store.

To all of Lois Read's Family,

I discovered this memorial today and it filled me with gratitude for having known "Mrs. Read" and having received endless blessings from her. In my younger years I almost grew up with the family, staying for overnights and being around and involved in so many activities. What I learned from Mrs. Read is a huge part of who I am today. I reached back to those days throughout my life and incorporated the artistry and creativity that is still with me today.
My word of commemoration is Gratitude.
To all of her family I send my heartfelt condolences.
Sincerely,
Susan Russo

I met Lois in January of 2022 while vacationing in San Miguel d´Allende. She was over 96 years old at the time and I had invited her for breakfast at my b&b. I was amazed when she told me that she had walked 20 minutes over cobblestones and hilly terrain. She definitely had the mind and constitution of a woman decades younger. What an amazing and inspiring woman!

Kind, and Loving! Enthusiastic about Art! She loved teaching and students!
In simple terms, Lois loved the art spirit and included its philosophy as a part of her life!

Lois and I became friends in Mexico. I gave her rides a couple of times and went to her poetry reading. Such a delightful person who will be greatly missed.
