Gump was my hero from a very early age. I admired his strength. Playing college hockey, my teammates nicknamed me "Gump" because I'd remove my goalie mask for part of each practice in honor of my hero. I am sorry for your loss he is missed.

As I grew up in Otterburn Park, I knew the Worsley Family. As A paper boy, I delivered the Montreal Star to his brother's and mom's home and on several occasions was paid by the Gump himself. I am left with fond memories and was truly saddened when I learnt of his passing. R.I.P Gump

To the Worsley Family:
Please accept my sincere condolences on behalf of the Ewart family. As a little boy growing up and playing hockey in Oterburn Park, I was thrilled when my father, the late Jim "little Jake" Ewart, introduced me to the Gumper - a real life NHL'er! And a Stanley Cup winner! And then to find out they had been friends! Wow! I enjoyed all the many Gumper stories dad shared with me. I think someone said it best in one of the earlier entries on this site, when they wrote that Gump's success gave the little guy, the underdog, the guy from Pt. St. Charles, or Cote St. Paul, or Otterburn Park, hope and encouragement to dream for more.
May he rest in peace.
Sincerely,
Michael Ewart

As a kid growing up in Beloeil and knowing his sons from school, I was always awed to be able to say that I knew "Gump". From caddying for him and his various entourages at the Golf Club to hoisting a couple with him at the "Au Fanal", he was and always will be, my Hero.

Rest In Peace, Gump.

My condolances to his Family and friends.

My all-time favourite hockey player was Gump Worsley. As a kid growing up in northern Manitoba (Flin Flon, to be exact)in the early '60's, we used to listen to the Saturday night hockey games on the radio (no TV) and then go and play on the outdoor rinks emulating our favorite players. I recall one radio broadcast between the Montreal Canadians and the New York Rangers in which Gump was hit in the head with the puck, left the ice to get stitched up and returned to finish the game. Well, with only radio as the medium, you can imagine how it sounded to a 12 year old boy ... Wow! From that moment on, Gump was 'The Man', the Rangers were my team and that bond lasted a lifetime.
My condolences to the Worsley family from a life long fan.

My sincerest condolences to the Worsley family. The Gumper was always my Mother's favorite player on the Habs. My uncle, Art Kennedy, was a statistician I believe for the Canadiens organization for many years and we always got to see tons of photos and even meet some of the players. My mother thought Gump was just the nicest guy in the world and I carry many fond memories of my years in Verdun and all the hockey talk.
Lorne gave many great memories to many people playing a game he loved and he will be sorely missed.

To the Worsley Family

I was sorry to hear of the passing of Gump. My father, Stewart Worsley was his cousin and as a young child he would tell me stories of what a great goalie Gump was. We always referred to him as Uncle Gump. My grandmother and grandfather, Margaret and Robert (Rab) Worsley would often send newspaper articles on Gump, to us in Australia.

When I moved back from Australia to Toronto 18 years ago, and would introduce myself to people they often would ask if that was Worsley as in Gump Worsley (especially if they were male and over 40). So after so many years he was still fondly remembered.

I do remember meeting him once as an adult, on the day he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

I am sorry I never had the pleasure of knowing him or your family more.

My deepest sympathy for your loss.

To the Worsley family;

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Worsley. I have a unique story that I am willing to tell (since my father isn't here to tell it). I have the pleasure of being named after Mr. Worsley. The one problem was I was a girl so my father changed from Lorne to Lorna. He always called me Lorne (even my baby mug is enscribed Lorne) except when I was in trouble. I asked him why I was named after a hockey player and his answer was "Gump was the only person I knew who made it out of Point St. Charles" (my father grew up on Burgess St.) When Gump opened his restaurant we went to eat there and found out the meal was on the house because of why I was named. they had the best corn fritters I had ever tasted.

It was enjoyable watching Gump play hockey and it is a pleasure to be named in honour of him.

The passing of the Greatest goalie brings with it my sympathies as Gump was my Great Uncle. Mt father was Stewart and my Grandfather Robert. We migrated To Australia in the early 70's and lost track of the rest of MY family. Robert passed in the mid 70's and his son my Dad in 97. I have always wanted to find out more of my heritage and about the GREATEST goalie of all time.My Uncle Gump. I have a few pictures ofhim and know of his Stanley Cup wins but would always like to know more. I know he wont be lonely in heaven as Dad and Grandfather will be waiting for him. God bless Gump and God bless the Canadians.

My dad was very friendly with the gump in the 60's and I remember going to the old boston garden as a kid to meet the gump after the games. I still have his goalie stick hanging with pride on the wall in my home. It was a game in 1971, a 4-4 tie, bruins and north stars. He saw about 70 shots that night, just incredible. He even got to sign the stick on June 5 1994 when he came to boston for an autograph show. It was the last time the Gump and my dad got to see each other. My condolences

I am sending my sympathy to the Worsley family. Many years ago, however, I taught Drew Worsley, Gump's son, in 5th grade at Valley View School in Bloomington, MN. I remember him well . . . blonde and fair-skinned back then. I even remember where he sat in my classroom. Drew, I'm especially remembering you these days in the loss of your father.

I retired in 2001. My husband and I have lived in Bloomington for 35 years.

My condolonces to the Worsley family. I was fortunate enough as a young boy to be entertained by " Gump" and the rest of my beloved Canadiens watching them on Saturday night TV. Gump was an inspiration to us all and a hero to many. When he made one of his fantastic stops I would brag to my friends as if Gump was an older brother or other close relative. I was fortunate enough to meet him once in my adult life and it was a memorable moment. God Bless.

January 30, 2007

I had heard about Gump growing up.
I didn't know much about him until I read Dave Bidini's book "The tropic of hockey". An excellent book in its' own wright, it praised Gump's autobiography. I read it and immediately became a fan of this unlikeliest of heroes. My partner, Jason Batten and I are fortunate to have the rights to Gump's story and are attempting to bring that story to the big screen so the world can remember or be introduced to one of the greats (from a time when being a professional goaltender was an elite club). It's too bad that there isn't room for heroes like Gump in todays game.
He will be sorely missed.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of "The Gumper". I remember going to a hockey game once in a while but was watching Gump and had no idea what the rest of the team was doing. He had a captivating presence on the ice and he will be very deeply missed on this earth. My sincerest condolences to the whole Worsley family. We have lost a great sports hero and a part of our childhoods has gone but somewhere, up there, a great hockey game is going on and Gump is in the net.
Rest in Peace.

"Gump" was my idol, and still is, he inspired me to the point where I didn't wear a mask until it became manditory in Billings in the USHL in the mid 70's. I've even been given the nickname of "Gump" which I carry proudly.

To the Worsley family: Courage!

I am one of a generation lucky enough to have grown up watching Lorne 'Gump' Worsley play, just a kid idolizing the Canadiens, my Canadiens de Montreal. I had never heard such names (Lorne and Gump) before. To us francophones he was "Gum Worsley". I cut out the Habs calendars to make a scrapbook. Thanks for that corner of my childhood. The dream never ended. The cups kept coming. We were the champs.
The dream makers pass but their work endures. Then others take up the torch as he once did. The dream lives.

Thanks Gump for swimming with me and Ted Harris at my favorite "swimming hole" in the Twin Cities-Bush Lake.
I was there to fish but since you guys wanted to swim I was in there with you!
My Dad was one of the original Season ticket holders Sec. YY Row 13.
And we lived right up the road from Wren Blair's house.
Thanks for all the memories!
You'll be happy we now have hockey in Springfield, Mo. and my son had the opportunity to win a Bantam State Championship in only our 5th year of skating!
Enjoy your Peace with the Lord!

I grew up in The Pas,northern Manitoba. I was 4 years old, 1962 starting to play hockey and my favorite team was The Montreal Canadiens. As the years went on, "The Gumper" was a main icon for my developing, my love, for the greatest game on Earth. As I was a smaller player, my Dad would point out that Lorne "Gump" Worsley too was a small man playing in a big man's game. The Gumper inspired myself and thousands of up and coming young hockey player's in the late 50's and into the 60's. When I was in goal while playing road hockey, I was the "Gumper"! My condolences to the Worsely family, The Montreal Canadiens Hockey Club and to all the hockey fans who were inspired by Mr. Lorne "Gump" Worsley. Gotta Love Him. Wish I could have been in his skates for just one moment. God bless you.

Ol'Gump is headed for the ultimate
"Goalie Crease in the Sky"As someone who knows first-hand how much fun he was to be around,I'm one of those lucky people.I first got acquainted with him while I was
a teenager working as one of the original stickboys for the Philadelphia Flyers and we'd take turns working in the visitor's dressing room for all the home games at the Spectrum.Nobody was more jovial or more of a character
in pulling pranks(or in having pranks pulled on himself)as a practical jokester than this guy,far more than his Canadien team
mates. But when it came time to guard the nets, nobody did it better:he was certainly in his heyday in the late 60's when he steered Les Habitants to 4 Stanley
Cups in five seasons.Even after moving to Minnesota and continuing in the same capacity with the North
Stars,I had the privilege of renewing the friendship with him when our club headed to Winnipeg for 3 weeks of training camp. That's
when you can really get to know somebody up close and personal,i.e.
living out of a motel room, eating
meals,two-a-day practices, team meetings, etc.and he was still as easy-going,gregarious and carefree as ever, even though he was approaching the twilight of his career. He was one good old guy.

William Granger

January 29, 2007

As a life-long New York Rangers fan, I fondly remember Mr. Worsley at the Rangers' Training Camps in Guelph, On in the '50's. After school, I'd catch the bus to the Guelph Memorial Gardens to watch the Rangers' practice, and later sitting beside "Gump" in the dressing room and getting his autograph. Later, at Don Cherry's Grapevine in Hamilton, I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Worsley again as an adult and having my picture taken with him. What excitement I felt as a child, an adult, and a fan and admirer of "the Gump". I even remember my Dad taking me to a game in Guelph when the Rangers played their farm team, The Biltmores. I was so happy to see him win the Stanley Cup with Les Canadiens, such a deserving credit to a hard working man, spouse, father, and hero to so many. Please accept my heartful condolences at this time of loss.

Sincerely,

Bill Granger

Gump made many friends he never knew or met..God rest this merry gentleman. January 29, 2007

Sincere condolences to the Worsley family...I've told this story many times over my 53 years as a Habs fan. My first recollection of "Gump", was in the sixties, watching a game from the Forum on our old black and white TV back in Sudbury, with my Dad, a native Montrealer, who passed his love for the Habs onto his three sons. I was maybe 10 years old at the time. During a stoppage in the play against Toronto, Gump left his crease, skated furiously to the blueline, and unleased a profanity laced assault, directed at the ref, every word of which could be heard loud and clear over the speakers of our TV...my Dad and I both looked at eachother in total astonishment, not really believing what we just heard. It was the first time in the history of television, that swear words could be heard so clearly and precisely. It's a moment I'll never forget...to see the passion with which he played the game, you just knew he must have been a ton of fun to play with, a real character, and, an awesome goalie...R.I.P. "Gump".

We had no TV in the small town where I grew up and I used to spend Saturday nights listening to the Canadiens play with the Gump in goal. He was my favorite player. When we got TV I couldn't wait to actually watch Gump and the Canadiens in action. They are great memories.

My condolences to his family.

Deepest sympathies to the Worsley Family. I can remember seeing one of his boys, I think it was Dean, wearing his west division all-star jersey at school, seeing the Gumper at his golf tournament in Beloeil and all the tremendous hockey he displayed for us over the years...one of my all-time favorites!

my condolances to a great hockey player, a great man and a great friend. Gump was representative of the really great goaltenders of our time, the likes of which we have not seen in several years. May he rest in Peace

Gump was an idol in my youth and an inspiration as a young goaltender. Transititioning the face mask and no mask era, his image will forever be imbedded in hockey lore, along with his energetic play and evident passion for the game.

Our family followed your career as young children & my mom & dad went to your games before the NHL. Mom was saying today, she & my dad & my Aunt Cellie & her boyfriend went to the Verdun Auditorium & parts of NY before you became a great icon. My mom is Jessie (low), her mom was Maggie Worsley (Uncle Bill's sister). What a wonderful man, and a great Canadien!

Condolences to the Worsley family on their loss. I think "Gump" said it best in an interview he gave to the LEGENDS of HOCKEY April 6, 2004, "When I broke in, there were only six goaltenders in the National Hockey League." "We were the best in the world." Gumper you were, without a doubt, one of the best. R.I.P.
