To the Hearn Family: Mr. Hearn was one of kind and like many before me have said he inspired so very many of us. He poured his heart and soul into the VUU Upward Bound Program! He even allowed me to do work study in the office (Hi Miss Janice). His warm personality, charm and style will never be forgotten. I can remember Lil Lou with his VW Beetle and Big Lou with his suits! I love you both and I thank God for you Mr. Hearn. You are MR. VUU! WE LOVE YOU!

I am so sad to hear about Nelson.You have my heartfelt sympathy. I will always remember the good ole days we had fun while in Kilmarnock. May the memories that mean the most to you live forever in your heart.

The Virginia State Conference NAACP sends its heartfelt condolences concerning the transition of Coach Hearn. He was a man that meant so much to so many. He positively affected the lives of generations of people. Thank you all for sharing him with us. He is not gone from among us unless we stop speaking his name. May future generations of African children learn of his legacy. If we truly love Coach Hearn, let us emulate his example.

To Andrea and Eric Hearn. My deepest condolences on the passing of your husband and father, Louis Hearn.
He will always be remembered as hard-working man who only wanted the best from his Upward Bound students and gave us his best. Those of us who listen and followed would not be where we are today if it was not for his patience, guidance, direction and tutelage.
It was privilege to have known Lou and his goodness lives on through you and his family. "Earth has no sorrow that Heaven cannot heal."

I was an Upward Bound student from 1978 to 1981. Mr. Hearn was a wonderful director and a very caring, compassionate person. I have nothing but fond memories of Mr. Hearn and Upward Bound. My prayers are with the Hearn family.

It is never goodbye but till we meet again.

I am deeply saddened by your loss. Mr.Hearn was very instrumental in my growth through the Upward Bound Program. He was the program. He made sure we had the tools for success and focused on making college apart of our plans. I will always remember our closing ceremony with his rendition of "I believe the children are the future".
May God provide you peace and comfort during this time.

Prayers for the entire family. He left a great legacy to all who knew him. He was a great mentor to my kids, Michael and Tiffany Bell. I thank GOD for him and his great works at Upward Bound.

Dearest Andrea, Lou was not only a great boss, but an even greater friend. I have fond memories of our Federal TRIO Program days and the professional events we attended as the other part of the TRIO - Lou, Wendell and Pat. I know I speak for many when I say “Lou” was a blessing and father figure to many. He nurtured the spirits of hordes of youth like me and the kinships we fostered under his tutelage prosper to this very day. My condolences go out to the Hearn family and to my extended Upward Bound family. Thank you Andrea for the sacrifices you made allowing “Lou” to be there for so many. Through these gifts, his spirit lives on in us. Miss you dearly!

The entire Hearn family has my deepest condolences. Having the honor of knowing "Uncle Lou" taught me that one man can make a big difference in this world. During one of the darkest and loneliest times of my young life Mr. Hearn took me in and sheltered me from everything that was going on around me. When I reached the brink of giving up in life he pushed me and reminded me that I could be anyone I wanted to be if I worked hard and never gave up. I will never forget the day he sat me down and told me real men can cry. And I did cry. He even joined in with me for a while before saying "okay thats enough now go to class." Mr. Hearn touched not just my life but the lives of so many people. He may have been short in stature but he was a giant of a man who's presence impacted all he encountered. I am proud to have had the honor of knowing and loving such a wonderful man. And I know he loved me and cared about my future because he told me so. I will never forget the love and energy you poured into others and especially into me. You were the wind beneath my wings.

So sorry to hear of Lou's passing. Cousin Andrea and Eric, Lou always will have a fond place in my heart he introduced me to so much culture and Arts and education through Upward Bound and I remember I was the only person at Virginia Union from Charles City and I am forever greatful for the opportunity he afforded me, as the program wasn't offered to Charles City Public Schools. You all fed me and let me stay at your home when I was homesick. You all are in my prayers. Love ya Andrea and Eric.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss! I remember the first time I met him... He was a very classy dresser, and such a wonderful personality and a beautiful smile. He showed his love for Andrea in a very caring way...very shuttle. He will be missed greatly by family.. And I sure miss seeing you both!! Mr.Hearn, I will see you my friend.... On the other side...save a place for me!! God bless the Hearn family.

I guess we didn't know that homecoming 2012 would be our last encounter....you will be missed but never forgotten. You were tough on me like your own son...for I knew you wanted nothing but the best for me....thanks for all that you did for me. I am deeply heart broken to hear of the passing of my hero and mentor Lou Hearn. I am a former VUU UP alumni and it was Mr. Hearn who incourage me and help me get into college and who talked to me often throughout high school, college and beyond to be whatever I wanted to be. I wouldn't be who I am without him. I will miss him dearly. To the family I express my deepest sympathies and know that your father was a role model to me and many other students at VUU.
