Louise Layton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2024.
Louise Layton, born Louise Robinson on November 18, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York, passed away on December 27, 2023, at the age of 77 in Livingston, New Jersey. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and sister.

Louise was an educated woman who dedicated her life to helping others. She had a special affinity for seniors and always went out of her way to lend a helping hand. Louise was a strong advocate for voting and encouraged everyone around her to exercise their right to vote.

In her free time, Louise enjoyed writing, reading, and traveling. She found solace in the written word and loved to explore new places and cultures through her travels.

Louise is survived by her daughters LaVon Layton Baker and Dawn Layton, as well as her grandchildren Deja Gillard Cannamore, Micah Layton, Danisha "Nini" Gilliard, William (Tre) Baker III, Autumn Baker, and Gabriella Baker. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren. Louise was preceded in death by her spouse Edward H. Layton Jr, her sisters Marie Harrell, Patricia Robinson, and Mary Beatrice "Bunny."

Louise received her education from PS 38 in Brooklyn, New York, and later attended Girls High School and West Side High School. She furthered her studies at Seton Hall University, where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree, and later pursued a Master's Degree in Human Services from Lincoln University.

In memory of Louise Layton, contributions can be made to Newark Advocates for Senior Issues, an organization that was close to her heart. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Evans - Gordan Funeral Home.

Louise's selflessness, dedication, and love for others will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May her soul rest in eternal peace.

We had not seen each other in a while, and we were both having breakfast/brunch at the same restaurant in Irvington, NJ!
She is one of the reasons that I am teaching, and will miss sharing my student´s experiences with her!

There once was a young Lady whose Greatest aspiration was to be Rich and Fabulously Famous as a Superstar Singer and Songwriter!!! She was absolutely obsessed over the idea of her name in Lights, Winning Grammy Awards and becoming One of the World's Greatest Entertainers of her time!!!
It wasn't until she met a Little Lady. A Petite Person with the Biggest Heart of Benevolence she had ever encountered in her entire life.
Her name is Ms Louise Layton. She's the change agent God hand picked to see what I couldn't see in myself. I called myself an Entertainer. She told me I was called to be an Educator. I told her how Successful I wanted to be. She said God created Me to be Significant for His Glory!!!
Never saw it coming, but I became a School Librarian for Newark Public Schools. Those fifteen years of me teaching as The Singing Librarian launched my RITTA BOOK literacy enrichment concept into Full Operation!!! The "Arts" in Language Arts initiative is the result of a Little Lady seeing something Bigger than I ever could see in ME!!!
Thank You So Much Ms Layton...
Till We meet again Rest in Sweet Everlasting Peace...

I am saddened to hear of the passing of my friend, confidante, traveling buddy and someone that was always there for me. We met in 1984 at CBC conference in DC and that was the beginning of a long and caring friendship Prior to COVID we never missed CBC and looked forward to September for CBC and April for the Minority Quality Health workshops. She loved her seniors and found resources to assist. I will miss her dearly. Despite the physical miles ,she being in Newark and I in Baltimore we remained close friends. LaVon & Dawn she loved you all and the grand children. I am truly blessed that our paths crossed Rest in Peace my friend.

Mrs. Layton was a fearless advocate for community and integrity and being sure every voice had validation. Her eloquence was only matched by her 'heartwork' when addressing social or health inequities, elderly, and marginalized persons in the South and West Wards of Newark. That passion forever cements her as an unequivocal mentor to those she embraced, included, and enfolded into her life.

Condolences to the whole family. Grace and strength those who will miss her and mourn her loss. Our prayers are with you.
