Loyal Smith Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 18, 2007.
Loyal George Smith Beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2007 at his residence in Felton. Loyal was born on July 31, 1929 in San Francisco where he graduated from Balboa High School. Loyal and his family have been part of the San Lorenzo Valley his entire life. He coached his sons in Little League from Farm through Majors and helped to build the field that they play on to this day. Loyal was actively involved with Valley Churches United, volunteering his time and equipment whenever needed. He enjoyed camping at Lake Camanche and attending nearly every Little League and Pony League baseball game his grandchildren played in. But most of all, Loyal valued holidays spent with his entire family. He owned and operated his family business, Loyal Electric, for close to 30 years and retired in May of 2000 following the death of his wife Doris. They were married 51 years, dating since they were 13. Loyal is survived by his brother John Smith of Campbell; his cousin Loyal Smith of Novato and his 10 children Karen Weldon of Red Bluff, Kristine Adams of Ben Lomond, Gary Smith of San Mateo, Carole Hatch of Ben Lomond, Janice Kilburger of Astoria, OR, Susan Gurr of Soquel, Michael Smith of Boulder Creek, Robert Smith of Felton, Larry Smith of Felton and Sandra Ball of WCH, Ohio; their spouses; 29 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends of Loyal and family are welcome to attend the Celebration of Loyal's Life that will be held at the Cocoanut Grove in Santa Cruz on Sunday, February 25 at noon. Contributions in memory of Loyal Smith can be made to Valley Churches United in Ben Lomond.

The Balboa alums who knew and loved Loyal will miss him. He was a "loyal" friend to all of us and to our alma mater. He always brought smiles and laughter to our reunions and alumni functions--andhe was a great dancer.

You will be missed, Loyal, but you will be rememembered.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

It has been years since I've seen my Grandfather. Sadly, time has taken its toll. His face and voice seem to fade into the distance of my mind. These are the times when I close my eyes, letting my mind fill with childhood memories. I can remember Loyal and Doris, my Grandparents. I can remember running in and around their house. By closing my eyes and reliving these events, their memories will always be with me, locked safely in my minds eye. Even in death we are all still connected. It's only an amount of time and fate before we all meet again.

Loyal and Doris were always in my heart and prayers. They took over for me in a time of desperation in my family. Helping to raise my son as one of their own. I will be forever grateful and they remain in my heart and prayers as does their family. God Bless you Doris and Loyal

In life there are ups and downs. Some are good, some are bad. You don’t know when they’ll come or when they will start. The passing of my grandfather was a downfall and mourning filled the hearts of my family.
Like a waterfall, tears slid down the cheeks of my mother and my siblings.
My grandfather was a great man who loved his 10 children along with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Grandpa is loved by his friends and family. Our memories of him will never fade. The remembrance of grandpa is stuck within us.

He will be with us forever in our hearts.
(Loyal Smith 1929-2007)

Dear Family of Loyal...the Balboa Buccaneers will miss him. He loved to come to our class reunions (his own class of 1947, or my class of 1946). He loved to dance and brought smiles and good humor wherever he went. We will miss him.
