Lucia Wheeler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2012.
Lucia Ann [Lowe] Wheeler, aged 92 years, died unexpectedly on May 19, 2012 in Penn Yan. Lucia loved life in Penn Yan and by The Lake, her home for 64 years. She was a well-known and well-respected teacher at Penn Yan Academy, retiring in 1979 with 28 years of service. Never a trip to town occurred without spontaneously running into and chatting with numerous friends and neighbors. Particularly, conversing with former students remained a continual pleasure throughout her long life. Lucia was active professionally as a charter member of the Alpha Tau chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an International Society for Key Women Educators. She was a faithful and active member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church, an avid supporter and participant of the Cardiac Rehab Unit at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital and was active with Ontario-Yates Hospice. She had been involved with the Rape and Abuse Crisis Service of the Finger Lakes for many years. She also received numerous public service awards for her widespread volunteerism in the Penn Yan and area communities, among them the St. Marks' Outstanding Service Award, the Donald and Corinne Stork Award, Catholic Charities' Sharing the Light, Rape Crisis' National Award for Advocacy and Community Work, and the Hobart and William Smith Community Service Award.
Lucia was born July 6, 1919 in Buffalo, the daughter of Harold T. and Anna Haig Lowe. She graduated from William Smith College in 1942. On December 30, 1944 she married Frank G. Wheeler Jr., who predeceased her in 2003, as did her brother Harold of Texas in 1968.
Lucia is survived by three much-loved daughters – Sarah A. Mukherjee, of Michigan; Susan W. Oliver, of Penn Yan; and Katy Wheeler [Mike Castelluzzo], of Branchport; six grandchildren, the greatest joys of her life – Dr. William [Dr. Hongyan] Oliver, of Massachusetts; Michael [Tanya Kent] Oliver and James [Katherine] Oliver, of Hammondsport; Michelle [Kyle Larson] Mukherjee and Dr. Matthew [Dori Rosenthal] Mukherjee, of California; and Emily [Rob] Terrell of Michigan; six great-grandchildren, the added pleasures of her long life - Noah, Augustus, Atticus, Anna, Loretta, and Morgan; sister – Jean Anderson, of Naples; four nephews – Charles, William, and Peter Anderson, and Harold Lowe; and many dear members of her extended family, among them, Walter Gladstone, David C. Oliver and the Venns, family doctor and neighbors Mike and Roz Bell, adopted son Barry Helfanbein, and pizza partner Ann Smithers; as well as many, many dear friends too numerous to mention.
Calling hours will be Friday, May 25th from 1-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. at Townsend-Wood Funeral Chapel, 201 E. Elm St., Penn Yan. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26th at 2 p.m. at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Corner of Main and Clinton St., Penn Yan.
Donations in Lucia's memory may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Keuka Comfort Care, Milly's Pantry, Soldiers' and Sailors' Cardiac Rehab program, or Safe Harbors.

Best teacher I ever had. Turned me into a wordsmith!
"Young lady, you´re only cheating (a crossword puzzle) when you´re cheating yourself out of an education". Those words still resonate with me to this day.

Today, I write every day for a living. I am often told that I write beautifully. I would not be the writer I am if it were not for Mrs. Wheeler. Her honors English class taught me all the skills I needed that carried me through a Master's degree and into a lifelong career. I am forever indebted to Mrs. Wheeler. She was also a member of my church, and gave me wonderful words of wisdom that got me through the awful years after my mother's death. RIP Lucia, and my condolences to the family.

Rest in Peace my dear Lucia. You were my teacher and then my friend and always have remained in my heart. The letters we exchanged over the years, the visits we had. I am glad I had the opportunity to let you know how much you meant to me growing up as a very lonely child and then always being there for me. I wish I had know about your passing sooner, I would have been there. Thank you for being you. With love Carol Rubin

It was my honor to teach with Lucia. She was the best of teachers & a real inspiration to those of us who came later than she.

We give thanks for the faithful witness of a member of God's Holy Catholic Church.

Teaching and inspiring children.

Caring for those in distress.

Welcoming the stranger.

Making the love of God manifest.

God the Father blessed Lucia all the days of her life. God the Son healed Lucia at the instant of her death. God the Holy Spirit strengthens Lucia for her service in God's heavenly kingdom. God the Holy and Undivided Trinity guarded her body, saved her soul, and has brought her safely to that heavenly country where he lives and reigns to the ages of ages.

I feel lucky to have known Lucia Wheeler as a regular customer at Spring Wheat 30 years ago and to have stayed in touch over the years. I knew she was a kind and intelligent person and modest too, since I had no idea of all the wonderful works she was a part of over the years. My warm thoughts are with you all as you celebrate this fine person.

I had you as a teacher 45+ years ago. I don't remember many of my teachers, but I remember you! Thank you.

A dear friend and mentor who showed that challenges make life interesting and overcoming them makes life meaningful.

Professionally, Mrs. Wheeler was beyond outstanding as an English teacher at PYA who also taught by example her core values, thus benefitting her students. Personally, Lucia could make "sense out of nonsense" and make a friend feel peace and direction when they needed it. An enduring friendship with Lucia, both professionally and personally since 1972 will feel a noticable void by her passing.

Lucia was my favorite teacher of all! We've been good, huggable friends for all these years as I graduated in 1969, Ihave told many that she was my favorite!
I will miss seeing her around town but I am so happy that she did not have a long illness and just quitely slipped away. Our entire community will miss this fiesty community leader and friend to so many.

I will always remember Lucia with fond memories. She was my first mentor in Penn Yan and helped me proceed through my initial year of teaching at the Academy. Living upstairs in her apartment was also a great experience and allowed me to get to know Lucia and Frank. She will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.

Mrs. Wheeler taught me in both freshman and sophomore honors English. She was both no-nonsense and supportive and one of my favorite teachers...primary, secondary or college. She is missed.

You and Frank were such dear friends to me and my family. I will never forget how kind Frank was to help Paul with his history project. You were always the first one to respond to my emails looking for volunteers to bake cookies or pies for the Keuka Comfort Care Home. You will be missed. Love, Maureen Wise and family
