Lucian Addario Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register on Dec. 15, 2018.
Addario, Lucian
Lucian Addario, born April 29, 1945 in New Haven, Connecticut, died unexpectedly, but peacefully in his sleep while visiting his niece and her children at the family home in Hamden on Tuesday afternoon, December 11, 2018. Lucian was accomplished in many fields. As a young adult he studied acting in New York City and appeared in several movies, the most notable being Midnight Cowboy. Later he returned to Connecticut and opened a highly regarded greenhouse and floral business from which he retired 2 years ago after more than 46 years of operation. His interests were always centered around fine art and design. His esthetic sense was highly regarded and informed all his work in plant and flower design or in the folk art he sometimes produced. Later in life he wrote several plays and children's books. Throughout his life he maintained a passionate connection to his church and lived by the precepts of his deeply felt Roman Catholic faith. He practiced his Christian beliefs every day in his many charitable works including the Saint Thomas More Soup Kitchen, New Haven Reads, Elm Shakespeare Company, Music Haven, Saint Ann's Soup Kitchen, and numerous acts of financial support for his extended family, friends, and those in need. He was also a founding member of the New Canaan Society of New Haven and a longtime member of the PBA, and The Small Businessman of the Year, awarded by the New Haven Chamber of Commerce. He was a vibrant, positive face and voice known and welcomed in every corner of Connecticut. He was particularly interested in the welfare of children. He leaves a large void in our greater community and a deep sadness among his family as his like is not often seen and we have been fortunate to have loved and lived with him. Lucian is survived by his 101 year old mother Mary (Maturo) Addario, sister Maryann (Addario) Leach, niece Andrea (Kelly), nephew Roger, and the many dear relatives in the Addario, Maturo, and Pasqualoni families.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at Saint Mary's Church on Hillhouse Avenue, New Haven, at 10 a.m., Monday, December 17 with a brief reception to follow in the undercroft of the church. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to New Haven Reads Book Bank, 45 Bristol St., New Haven, CT 06511, St. Ann Soup Kitchen, 930 Dixwell Ave., Hamden, CT 06514, St. Thomas More Soup Kitchen, 12 Trumbull St., New Haven, CT 06511 or the Mercy Center 167 Neck Rd., Madison, CT 06443. Lucian was my childhood neighbor. His family lived across the street from each other. As an adult I bought Lucian's Skin Care facility (Skinsations) and loved this job for many years. RIP my friend.

Lucian was a childhood friend with whom I spent many days playing in his yard. We saw each other only on rare occasions as adults, however I will always cherish those times. I was taken aback at the news of his passing. My deepest condolences to his sister, MaryAnn, and his mother, Mary. He will always have a special place in my memories.

It's been just over a month since my dear friend Lucian passed, and I'm still in shock. I can't believe I will never talk to him again; but I know he will always be close to my heart. God Bless you Lucian, Carol

I first met Lucian around 1972 through Lucian's next door neighbor and my long time friend Bob Cassella.
I got to know Lucian further through the greenhouse. Over the years a strong friendship slowly developed.
When visiting the area, Lucian and I would frequently go out for pizza. We had some deep discussions involving theology and philosophy. Some not so deep discussions involving sports. Occasionally we would go for a bicycle ride or a hike up the giant. At the same time he was maintaining friendships with many people; running a successful business and doing numerous volunteer activities. Even with all these pieces of his life, Lucian was more than the sum of the parts. I think the huge turnout for his memorial service says a lot about how much he touched so many lives. He will be missed.

Am very saddened to hear of Lucian's passing. I got to know him close to 30 years ago through the greenhouse. He did many holiday displays for us. A great and wonderful man, always had a smile on his face. My condolences to the Addario family.

Though I never met him, Lucian touched the life of a dear friend of mine and I will always be grateful for the kindness and generosity he showed this young man -yet remained unnamed and unknown to him. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. The world obviously lost an angel.

Sorry to hear of Lucian's unexpected passing. I have known him since high school and he was a great guy and always there for you when you needed a special arrangement made up. I would run into him periodically down at the now shell & bones and we would always have a drink together. He was truly a class act and always smiling. My condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lucian only once at one of the pre-game parties at Syracuse, with Lisa Pasqualoni. My father, fondly known as Cousin Junior (Frank Addona) was always so happy when he spoke of Lucian. He had a deep respect for Lucian and his dedication to his floral business. Lucian touched the lives of so many in his community and I'm certain will be sorely missed. There are people that are put here on earth to enrich the lives of others and Lucian will absolutely leave an indelible mark on all the lives he touched. My deepest condolences go out to Mary and his extended family.
Much love, Maribeth Addona

I first met Lou when I moved to New Haven in 1980. I was working for Joel Schiavone and was opening a new restaurant in town, and I was put in charge of finding a "plant man".

That was the beginning of a long and memorable friendship of some 38 years. Over that time, Lou became one of my best friends, if not my best. We, along with a group of close friends, shared a lot of great times together. It was through Lucian that I met my friends from Chart House. It was through Lou that I meant and befriended so many New Haven locals during my time running restaurants with Henry Malone. Frank Pepe's was always a better dining experience with Lou in booth. Ski trips to Aspen where we set up the Avocado Ski School group were always a joy, especially watching Lou come down the mountain like a hockey player!! Dinners with him in my restaurants or at Leon's were better feasts for his attendance. The list goes on.

And who did Lucian not know for God's sake! He was always the mayor of New Haven and Hamden for sure. Funny story: I was with Lou one time in NYC, and we turned a corner somewhere on the lower East Side, and low and behold, he ran into someone he recognized from his days in NYC when he worked at the YMCA. And who could not picture what it must have been like riding a cab in NYC with him at the wheel.Dustin Hoffman had nothing on Lucian!!

And what about his loving relationship with his Mom and Dad. Wow! Lou graciously introduced me to them both. Some of my most lasting New Haven memories were enjoying his Mom's outrageously delicious Italian home cooking. OMG! And the two Thanksgivings I shared at his childhood home were priceless. And seeing his Dad at "The Greenhouse" was always brought a smile to face.

But most of all, it was Lou's spirit for life; his sincere care and empathy for others; his insight into the human condition; his appreciation for art; his infectious smile and positive attitude that touched us all and are etched in our minds forever. And it is these attributes and traits of goodness and greatness that which will continue to impact my life for the better.

I was fortunate enough to be home in New Haven this past September, and shared two dinners and one lunch and long conversations with my friend. I will cherish those final interactions forever. In fact, there was a quote of his kitchen wall that I captured on my camera that read: "A man's character comes from his history. His greatest legacy will not be of intellectual endeavors, or being the feats of the brawny beast, but what he can do in service of God and mankind. LA " In retrospect a fine man writing about his own glory.

God has called Lou home to be in the company of angels and saints. And he will surely stand apart from them all. Neither Lou, or any of us, knows of God's plan for us, and when we will take our last breathe. And it is better we never will, as this simple fact allows us the opportunity to do good, pay it forward, and live life to its fullest.

Lastly, we all joked with him about his brush with fame in The Midnight Cowboy, or when he did a stand in love scene for Don Johnson (true story!), but for years, many of us joked about Lou's lack of timeliness, as it seemed he was always late to everything. We always said he would be late for his own funeral! Well, sadly, he was early for this time.

I never thought I would not spend at least a day or two with Lou and a few of our other older friends hanging out in a retirement center somewhere, sharing a few laughs and a glass of wine. But I will happily celebrate the joy he brought us all, and for the better world that his efforts and contributions left behind.

He may have gone before his time, but he led a rich and blessed life, of his own making. We can only hope to do the same.

We love you Lucian.

Although I only saw Lucian once over the past twenty or so years, it made me very sad to hear of his passing a few days ago. I got to know him from my days at the Oxford Ale House and I regarded him as a friend. He was an original..... his optimism and spirit shined brightly and he always evoked a smile regardless of my mood. He will be missed.....

Lucian and I grew up together in the same neighborhood. He was older than me and I remember he skated at Sanford Barn and played golf at Meadowbrook and played on the HHS golf team. His mother made me fried dough one Saturday morning I think in 1958 and I've never forgotten the kindness he and his mother showed a little kid from the neighborhood. Rest in peace Lucian, it's a journey and you are still on that journey.

Sorry to hear of Lucien's passing. I met Lucien in the early '60's through his cousin TJ. Always a gentleman. I would run into him from time to time when I still lived in Ct. A very nice man. May he rest in eternal peace.

I met Lucian in 7th grade and re- connected through a group of very special friends in the 80s. We all enjoyed many wonderful ski trips, sailing adventures and festive times, made so much better by his infectious laughter and energy. When a moment required a caring voice, his was always heard and much appreciated. I ache for all who feel a hole in their souls today. Godspeed Lucian. Godspeed.

Lucian and cousin Jimmy we're friends since jr high. I still have a tree I bought from Lucian and his Dad 40 yrs ago. We ate at Gloria's house across from the park.
God will take care of Lucian, he was a good man He had a good run

Like everyone who knew Lucian, I was stunned to hear of his passing. Whether it was years between our meetings or days as it's been recently at our yoga practice, our hello was always the same...a long, warm hug. We were third cousins, but that's not why I loved him. I loved him because he was a warm bright light that you felt just by being around him. The world is not dimmer or colder now that he is gone, it is warmer and brighter that he's been here.

Lucian was my neighbor and always greeted me and my family with that impish smile. His family brought our neighborhood together, His Mom always making treats for the neighborhood kids and making sure all the kids were nice to everyone. Lucian started Skinsations, in Guilford Ct. and I purchased this from him. It is still going strong 41 years later. He was always kind and supportive. RIP Lucian. You certainly left your mark on all who knew you!

Lucian has been a life long friend which began in Centerville Elementary School many years ago. We remained good buddies through high school, college and for all of our adult & business lives as well. As noted in his obituary Lucian was a very unique person. Talented, thoughtful, quiet and introspective he was the voice of reason who made sure we never got too much out of hand and the friend we could always count on. To Lucian deeds were much more important than words. I am so sad to hear of his passing. My sincere condolences to the entire family, especially his Mom who always made sure we ate before leaving for a night of fun. Rest in Peace my friend.
