Lucille Doris (Elwell) Mann, 80, passed away peacefully at home on July 20, 2022, in Escondido, CA, after a short battle with leukemia. Her daughter and son-in-law , Susan and Henry Wallace, who had been her caregivers, were by her side.
Lucille was born in Danbury, CT in June, 1942, to Wayne and Gloria (Beers) Elwell and was a graduate of Danbury High School, class of 1960. She married the love of her life James (Jim) F. Mann, Jr. in February, 1961. They remained married for 53 years, until his passing in 2014. Along with Jim's parents, they owned and operated Jimmy's Bake Shop in Danbury, CT. They raised two daughters, Susan and Lucille living in Danbury and Brookfield, CT until 1977, when the bakery was sold and they relocated to southern California. Lucille worked for many years as a receptionist for Lee's Photography in Poway, CA.
Lucille and Jim enjoyed camping in their motorhome and upon their retirement spent an entire year traveling around the country. They then settled in Fort Mohave, AZ, but would spend summers with their daughters in CA and camping at southern California's beautiful beaches and mountains, away from the AZ heat. They loved the beach and their favorite vacation spot was Maui, where they traveled numerous times.
Lucille continued to spend summers and holidays in CA with her family after Jim's passing. She enjoyed word search puzzles, scrabble and boggle. She was not a big gambler but enjoyed playing a social game of poker with her friends or visiting a local casino to play some slots or a few card games. She loved all animals, never meeting a dog she didn't love and also had a great affinity for the beauty of tigers, of which she had accumulated quite a collection of figurines and art.
In 2021, after being diagnosed with some health issues, she moved back to California and lived with her daughter, Susan, who became her caregiver for the last year of her life. Her life was devoted to her family and there she was able to spend time with her daughters, her only granddaughter, Lindsay, along with her two great-granddaughters who were the light of her life.
Lucille will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In addition to her husband, Jim, she was predeceased by her parents, Wayne and Gloria Elwell, and her eldest brother, Gary Elwell. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Henry Wallace of Escondido, CA, daughter, Lucille Moody of Escondido, CA, granddaughter and her husband, Lindsay and Ross Anthony of San Diego and her two great-granddaughters, Hazel and Margot Anthony. She is also survived by her siblings, Wayne (Isabel) Elwell, George (Marianne) Elwell and Gaye (Cecil) Drake of Texas and her sister Gloria Elwell and her best friend, Sheree Yeoman of Florida, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of her life will be held at a future date.
