CHAMPAIGN - Luella J. (Sue) Chapman, 94, of Champaign died Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.
A memorial visitation will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Faith United Methodist Church, 1719 S. Prospect Ave., Champaign, with an internment service immediately following at the church. Morgan Memorial Home, 1304 Regency Drive W, Savoy, is assisting with the arrangements.
Sue was born Sept. 14, 1928, in Paris Township, Mich., the daughter of Henry and Anna Wilcox Essenberg. She married Gerald Chapman on Aug. 14, 1970, in Rockford, Mich. He died Oct. 27, 2021.
Survivors include two daughters, Holly Exton of Tolono and Kelly (Peter) Simons of Dunn Loring, Va.; a son, Christopher Chapman of San Leon, Texas; four grandchildren, Sheila (Matt) Albers, Kirk (Christine) Simons, Alice Simons, and Joseph (Lisa) Chapman; and four great-grandchildren, Davis, Kalvin, Vivian and Titus.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Harold; a son-in-law, Thomas Exton; and a daughter-in-law, Shelley Chapman.
Sue taught middle school mathematics and English for many years at Northview Public Schools in Grand Rapids, Mich. She retired from teaching in 1979 when the family moved to Champaign.
She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, Champaign, Lincolnshire Fields Country Club and the Carle Auxiliary. Sue enjoyed playing golf with the women's league at Lincolnshire Fields for nearly 37 years. She was also an avid bridge player and shopper and loved to sew and paint for her family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
