Recordando a Pototi, fiel amigo.

Luis Manuel Fernandez Martinez (Manolin)
Euology to My Father
By: Jessica Eckaus
September 20th, 2017
My Dad, Manolin, as he was known by loved ones, was born in The Gorgas Hospital in Panama, Republic of Panama, on January 10, 1948. Son of Esther Martinez Beitia, who was from the high lands of Chiriqui, a province of Panama, and Manuel Fernandez Peña, a first generation Panamanian of immigrants from A Coruña, Spain; brother of Isolina Fernandez Martinez, his only sister, and who is present here today. Manolin was married to Josefina Rivera for 14 years and together, they had two children, Jose Manuel Fernandez-Rivera and Jessica Eckaus, née Fernandez Rivera, and two grandchildren, David Nathan Eckaus and Samuel Elijah Fernandez-Naza.
Manolin had an interest in Mathematics, and Architecture; he studied Architecture at the University of Panama, and later, worked for the U.S. Rodman Naval Base in Panama, as a draftsman. Eventually, he immigrated to Puerto Rico, where he became a construction contractor and owner of LMF Panama Construction. Together with his son, Jose Manuel Fernandez, his construction pupil and protégé, and all his employees, he bid and completed numerous projects; among them we can mention, The Ritz Carlton Hotel of Puerto Rico, Dorado Beach Resort, Telefonica de Puerto Rico, Metropolitan University, and the expansion of the San Juan Mall, Plaza de Las Americas. He was known to be an early riser and a hard working man. Demanding at times at work, but generous to his employees. His son, Jose Manuel remembers the Christmas parties that Manolin prepared himself for his employees; every body went home with a Christmas dinner and a big turkey.
As an immigrant, Manolin considered the United States of America, the greatest country in the world, this land gave him and his children the opportunity to work hard and establish a family that would continue a good legacy. But he would sometimes look back at his little Isthmus that united North America and South America, The Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean through a Canal strip, his beautiful Panama. One of his favorite poems was about Panama, called Patria or Nation, by Ricardo Miro.
While not at work, Manolin was a bohemian and free spirited person. He loved to listen to Salsa music; among his favorite singers, Ruben Blades, and La Fania All Stars. He was charismatic and an entertainer, a great dancer, and always had a funny joke to share. Even in difficult situations, he managed to see the bright and positive side of life. Among his hobbies, he liked fishing, hunting, and race cars. He was also known to always help the less fortunate.
In his last years, we witnessed how grateful he felt having received the Lord Jesus in his heart; he became a fervent praying man, constantly praying for his family. Always very happy to see his grandchildren David and Samuel; having the opportunity to meet them and share with them greatly brightened his life.
Manolin left an imprint in every person he met.he will be missed. But we have peace in our hearts because we know that he went to meet his heavenly Father in a place where there is no more pain.
Papi, I love you I will always remember your loving words and keep them in my heart.
Tu Chombita, que te Ama,
Jessica

Jose Manuel Fernandez-Rivera.

Te queremos mucho.

These are treasured pictures with Manolin. They bring back great memories of our youth. The first picture is when he came all the way from Panama to Nebraska to attend my graduation. It meant so much to me. The second picture is from the Tocumen Airport when he came to see me off as I left to play basketball representing Panama at the world games. He was a great friend and I will miss him dearly, but I am happy to have such special memories from our friendship. -Herb Cousins/Tito

Atentamente:
su primo Ricardo Quintero Fernández y Familia.
