Luisa Conte Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 21 to Jan. 27, 2011.
CONTE, Luisa Donata (nee DeSantis) September 24, 1919 - January 19, 2011 With much sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our mother, nonna and great nonna Luisa, on January 19, 2011, at the age of 91 years. Luisa was born on September 24, 1919 in Arce, Frosinone, Italy. She was raised in the small community of St. Eleuterio and it was here she met and married her husband Rocco. In 1949, after the birth of their two sons, Luisa and Rocco immigrated to Canada and made their home in Calgary where their daughter was born. Luisa's greatest joys were her family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and no one ever left her home hungry. She was especially known for her pasta sauce and pastries. Luisa will be lovingly remembered by her sons Larry (Peggy), and Frank (Rosalina) and by her daughter Rita (Greg) Bellotto; her grandchildren, Shawn Conte, Jennifer Philcox, Dean and David Bellotto, Michael and Elissa Conte; and eight great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law Anna DeSantis, Arce, Italy and many nieces and nephews in Calgary and Italy. She was predeceased by her husband Rocco Conte in 1969. Relatives and friends are invited to Prayers and Tributes at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Chapel of the Bells (2720 Centre Street North) this evening, January 27, 2011 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Catholic Church (corner of 4 Street and Northmount Drive N.W.) on Friday, January 28, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly to The Alzheimer Society of Calgary, Suite 201, 222 - 58 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3 (Telephone 403-290-0110, www.alzheimercalgary.com ). In living memory of Luisa Conte, a tree will be planted at Big Hill Springs Park, Cochrane by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Chapel of the Bells, 2720 CENTRE STREET NORTH. You were the most loving grandmother any grandchild could ever have. Thankfully God has given me a good memory so I am able to recall a lot of good times we spent together. Its as if it were yesterday you were asking us to go downstairs and bring up what we wanted to drink which was either Coke or Ginger Ale and it was almost time to put in the pasta and you would ask us to come over to the cupboard and pick out which kind. (I always ended up grabbing a handful of Wheat thins on the way out.) Lunch was almost ready, so we sat down at the kitchen table adjusting the curtains because of how much sun was blasting in snacking on some meat, cheese and bread before we enjoyed the best pasta sauce anyone could possibly make. It seemed like no one had as much love to give as you Nonna. Thats probably why everything you made taste so good; and not just your pasta sauce. For generations you will remain a legend for your cooking and baking alone.
Even though it wasnt that funny back then; my sister and I miss-behaving under you care some may rule with an Iron Fist Nonna she ruled with a wooden spoon and if she wasnt holding it in her hand to stir sauce well we knew just to start running. I remember staying with Nonna a lot as a kid there was not many toys to play with but we somehow managed to keep busy. I remember I would go out with Nonna to her backyard as she was hanging clothes on the clothesline; she would be cursing out all the cats that had gotten in her yard. No one could swear at the television like Nonna either...no one disliked commercials as much as her. She used to say Ma-keep-quiet or just simply Ma shut-up-a I remember she faithfully loved General Hospital and Another world she would get mad at what was happening on the show and say something like Stat-azite a Chocolone Later I found out it was slang in Italian for Shut-up you talk too much.
I never met Nonno but I have been told that he had a bubbly personality much similar to Zia Rita. I look forward to meeting you one day Nonno. No doubt his passing must have been hard on the whole family as it is now as we celebrate your life Nonna. Even though you were without your husband, you never re-married. Your will to keep your family together was strong, and your relationship with God even stronger. You are now after over 40 years reunited with your husband as a wife, parents, and grandparents forever watching over us until we all too are reunited. I especially want to thank you Nonna for teaching us to keep our faith and to not fear being alone.

God rest your soul Nonna! In my heart the memories we shared will remain!!

Hi Dean,

I’m sorry to hear about your Nonna. It’s one of those sad parts of our lives, that as we grow older, so do our elders. I hope she is having a great view from up there…dancing with your Nonno and sipping wine amongst the clouds.
