Luther,

Man... I sure wish you were around for the journey. I'm sure you're still looking down at each of us laughing and smirkin'. I can't help to think, how life would be different for my ownself and other's had you not passed early. The paths we all took separately, the roads we closed off, other's found and seem to be the path forever. What you would have done in regards to this crazy world we live in today. Miss you Luther often and appreciate your friendship. Love ya brother.

Jennifer, Lori, Brad, Irvy, John and so on.... While Luther touched us all in his own unique way. Gave us true friendship through thick and thin. Was that one true friend that could be counted on regardless. Helped and often would mever ask for it himself (I'm going with his stubbornness and pride on this one ??). Please take a moment and remember when thinking of Luther how he loved. He loved riding. He loved his family. He loved those he called friends. More importantly, he showed it to us. That was a gift from him, one sorely missed. He now is with his dearly missed wife, beloved Lex, friends that he had not seen in so long and is able to share that same love we felt for a while with them once again. He is happy, fishing riding and avoiding drama. Lets all take a moment to realize that individually we have an opportunity to make a difference within our own circle of friend's. Next time a thought of Luther and a heart pull from it occurs. Take that moment and think what would Luther do right then. Sit back, envision it. Feel him with you. Then when the moment has passed. Reach out to one you know and love and share with them how much they mean to you while you have the chance.

Recently, I ran into a friend from past times with Luther and we talked also about how Luther is still missed so very often. Jennifer, know you're not alone in the feeling. Good luck girl.

A sincere thank you Scotty & Leslie. I read that email notice and was just jumping online to figure out a way to download a copy or something. I am sure all of us feel the same in saying thank you very much. While it's amazing it's been more than a year now, I know many of us catch ourselves on a great ride talking to the big guy, or kicking up a lil' Bellamy Brothers Old Hippie with him in mind.

Scott and I have sponsored the guest book to remain open forever...allowing any or all of his friends and family to continue to share their feelings and thoughts. Its important to us, and a tribute to Luther....we still miss him so much everyday!

I cannot believe it has been 1 year. So many things and situations still remind me about Luther. I agree with Leslie, it seems to get harder instead of easier. We all miss him, he sure left a lot of friends here on earth!

I know that All of the firsts are always so hard...but this Christmas was harder than I thought it would be. We ALWAYS spent Christmas day with you and this year your chair was as empty as our hearts. They say time heals, but i am starting to believe that all time does is make it more real that you are gone. I hold tight to our memories, but I am still angry that you are not here...I know I am not supposed to ask "why?" but I am....WHY Luther....WHY???....or maybe I should say " Why God...why?"....

It still seems like a bad dream. I want to wake up and be able to call him, just to say hi. I loved my Uncle Lumpy very much & miss him more than words can say. He was "larger than life" to me & so many others. I know he is in heaven with so many loved ones than have gone on before him & I am happy for him, but so sad for all of us left behind. All my life Lumpy had a bike & I was so excited everytime I got a ride, he would take those corners so low you could touch the ground. Now he's riding on streets of gold & I bet he's having a blast. He was a Great Uncle to me & my kids. He will be loved, missed but always remembered.

I am so sorry to hear about Luther. I used to live in his Bloomington neighborhood. One day (in 1992 or so) I was walking my siberian husky puppy (Scout) in the neighborhood and a lady driving by pulls over and runs up and hugs my puppy - it was Laurie. She was so excited that there was another siberian husky in the neighborhood and immediately we went over to meet Lex - Luther and Laurie's siberian husky puppy. For the next several years whenever we went for a walk, we would have to stop by Lex's house so Lex and Scout could run and play. Luther and Laurie were great people - so friendly and kind. I still come back to the neighborhood to look at Luther's light displays. I am comforted to know that Luther and Laurie are reunited - they both left way too early.

I will miss you and never forget the great times we had, although they were not nearly enough. You were a man people could trust and you never judged anyone for their faults.
For those of you who did not know Luther, he was a once-in-a-lifetime friend. There are people out there that range from good to bad, he was above and beyond the best. He is now and always will be loved. "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened" (Dr. Seuss)

We never knew you Luther. We live 3 blocks away from you. We only knew your name. We always knew it was Spring when you would drive down 100th on your bike! A sign we will miss. A few years ago, you had a manger scene up in your yard for Christmas. My 4 and 6 year old noticed that Baby Jesus was missing. They wanted to put a baby doll in the crib for you. We finally found the perfect baby doll, wrapped it in a blanket and on a dark evening in December, my two small kids tiptoed to your manger and laid the Baby Jesus down. My kids still talk about that night. We joyed in seeing you in your garage, full of fun; lights, TV, posters, and your bike. We never knew you, but you touched us. We too, will miss you. Somehow, let us know when Spring is here...

My brother and I grew up with "Uncle" Luther as our parents were good friends with Luther and Laurie. We always had so much fun around them and Luther could always make you laugh. Even as we grew into young adulthood he was still around and took us out to lunch and always stopped by on his bike when he saw us outside working on the house. When our Mom died he was right there asking us if we needed anything because that's the kind of guy he was. Needless to say, I and my brother have many fond memories of Luther.

God, Laurie and Lex needed Luther up in Heaven so I hope he continues to enjoy the ride.

Well Luther, you will be dearly missed.

Even though I did not know you all that well in the few years we've been acquainted, I know you were one of the nicest and honest people I had ever met. Like the time I brought my Softail over to your garage to show you what I had installed and you couldn't even control yourself and uttered "what the hell'd you do that for?" and then showed me the folly in my ways... or when you called me with a question about your "internet machine" and I was able to return the favor by asking you "what the hell'd you do that for?" Cuz you felt like it, you replied. Brother, you're now free to do whatever it is you want. Peace be with you man!

My deepsest and most sincere condolences to Luther's family, loved ones and friends. He went by SpecialX1 on our Harley site and from all the wonderful responses He was a very special man and I cen see he has touched many a heart as well as a funny bone or two. I never got to meet you in person Luther but I feel like I've known you all my life and we've had a lot of good laughs over the years. God Bless you Brother. Ride the good ride. You could not have met Luther and not loved him. Laurie was the same way. Luther had a big presence and a gentle heart. He didn't have to say much to make you smile. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, Leslie, Scott, Alex and Bo. I can't imagine the loss you are feeling right now, but be comforted knowing he drove that Harley straight through the pearly gates to Laurie. I smile knowing how happy they both must be right now.

I also knew Luther through my brother, Smitty. A visit from Luther meant more crazy stories and lots of laughter. He always listened to us kids and would tease us for fun. Our family liked him very much. You were one of a kind, Luther and you will be very, very missed.

Like many others, I only knew Luther as Specialx1 on HTT. With over 8000 members, Special was one of the few that stood out. Everyone seemed to know him and enjoy his comments... often totally unrelated to the discussion, but always sure to grace the reader with a smile. If you were having a bad day, reading a thread with one of Special's comments was always sure to cheer you up. Ride safe my friend, find all the fun places up there, and be waiting at the gate when I arrive so you can show me the ropes.

I, like many others on HTT were shocked and saddened to hear of Luther's (Specialx1) passing. Our condolences are with his family and friends. Most of us only knew him online. Sweet Luther is so very missed now and will forever be. His great big loving hugs, his words of wisdom, his honest loyalty, and his ability to make people smile and laugh were a blessing to all of us. He always said "If your happy darlin, I am happy". I think of those words when the tears come and it somehow makes it a little better. Plus he would kick my butt for crying over him, which would make me laugh. It is just who he was...the most amazing, unselfish friend anyone could have!

Go and ride the hills of heaven with your girl hun and one day we will all ride together again.

Thank you Luther for being you! I love you and miss you so much buddy! You will always have a special place in my heart!

Naomi and Judy: I knew Lumpy through my sister Barb and Jay Capistrant. He was always so kind, cheerful, smiling and fun-loving. I remember a group of us taking an MTC bus rented from Jay's company, going down south of the river to a hayride, and Lumpy grabbed two poles inside the bus and actually rocked the bus as we were traveling. Never forgot that and the great laughs he provided us all. What a brother I am sure you will miss dearly. My sympathy and prayers.

Just few thoughts I have for this tragic turn. I always loved reading specialx1 replies on Harley Tech Talk. They were sometimes fun to read and other times down right from the heart. To me he was one of the best on there. Even though I never got to meet him, I feel in a way I did. I'm not sure how he came up with his nickname on HTT "specialx1". I truly believe he never thought of himself as "special", but to all of us he really was special. May God be with Luther and his family and friends in this time. Dang it dude, we are going to miss you. Ride Free. Glen

I'm another HTT member that enjoyed Luther's (specialx to us on the site) sense of humour as he greeted folk and razzed some of the more seasoned members of the site. I have never met Luther in person but that portion of his personality that was evident on the HTT site was helpful, entertaining and a great contribution to the site. My thoughts are with his family and close friends.

March 3, 2010

To the family and friends of Luther,
I have known Luther but only a short while through HTT’s, Harley internet site.
It was instant comradely for the both of us. He told me he was a teddy bear and with the whiskers he sported, I believed him without question.
I chatted with him on many occasions, his quick wit would make you laugh till you were sore.
I never met a man that made me feel I was a life long friend, it was easy for both of us.
I talked to Luther the day before his passing via mail and could only guess how he would make me smile again.
His love of helping people, humor, friendship and motorcycles has set an example for many, including this writer.
Luther may have passed on but his memory will last a life time, for both my wife, Maria and I.
Blessings to the Luther family and friends.

Our Sincere sympathy,
Don and Maria ( Don….aka…Panzer )

As an administrator on the web forum HarleyTechTalk.org, Luther (specialx1) was always a handful. So we decided to ask him to be a moderator of our off-topic board. LOL He also became the site Greeter as no new member went un-noticed. He will be greatly missed by all.

Luther was one of the kindest, most gentle man I ever knew. My children grew up at Luther and Laurie's house. Even after I was the "ex" of his best friend, I knew I could call Luther and he would be there no questions asked. At least he will be able to ride away with Laurie on the back of the bike. Luther will be missed.

I also Meet Luther through Harley Tech Talk. We meet in person last summer at a little get to gether one of the riders on the group planned. For some reason Luther was singled out and was the one that got picked on the most. He took all in with good humor and we had a great time.
Since that time I feel like I have gotten to be good friends although we never got to meet in person again. We talked on the phone a couple times, plus regularly in the HHT group. I really wish I had gotten to know him better!
Luther, or Specialx1 as we know him by will be missed by many.

My big brother Kim Smith ("Smitty") was a close friend of Luther back in the 70's, and having Lumpy around during my childhood was something I'll always remember. I have a copy of an old 8-track tape that my brother and Lumpy and their buddies recorded of themselves at a party, and listening to Lumpy on that tape still makes me smile to this day. Ride on, Lumpy.

I too only knew Luther as specialx1 on the internet web site HarleyTechTalk. I will remember him most as the person who made sure that any new member who introduced themselves in the new member section was welcomed into the forum. Because of his friendly nature, he was affectionately named as the official HTT greeter. His screen name seemed to be an accurate description of him, he was a truly a special person. His big heart and friendly nature was apparent in every post that he made, and his witty banter made his posts very enjoyable to read. I and my fellow internet brothers and sisters from HTT will miss him greatly. My condolences go out to his family and friends.

I only knew Luther as specialx1 on HarleyTechTalk, an internet group of over 8600 members. Even though most of us never get a chance to meet in real life we discuss much more than motorcyles and the love of riding, we listen to each other and offer solutions to every topic you could imagine. Luther was one of the class clowns so to speak and along with a few others he really made it fun to check in often. Anyone could tell that he was an understanding and genuinely nice guy. This sad news has traveled fast and I want to say to his friends and family how sorry I am for your loss. I am 55 myself and really enjoyed his online company. Life is short. I miss him too.

Naomi, Judy and family,

When I stop and think about Luther, I have vivid memories of the day you moved into the house at 10013 Emerson. Jim Geary and I went over to meet Luther, and your dad had to prompt him to say hello, as Luther was very shy, hiding behind furniture in the moving truck. I remember his Schwinn bicycle as well, and when he put the butterfly handle bars with the banana seat on it, well.......very cool! Luther taught me how to play the card game Spades, which we played a lot of with your brother Jim. We also played quite a bit of pool downstairs, and whether we were playing cards or pool, he would always serve up a cold Pepsi. These are just a few of the fond memories that I wanted to share with you about Luther. I will remember him as being such a good guy. My sympathies to you and your families!

I will miss Luther's voice, always ready for a good laugh. Over 38 years of friendship and with gaps he would always pick up as we had just left off. He had such a big heart. I was so surprised and saddened to see the announcement. While on my way to visit my mother, I stopped to see Luther when I saw him in his garage a couple of summers ago. My deepest sympathy to Luthers family. I was a very close friend of Laurie and Luther. I saw Luther last summer and I was very happy to see him enjoying his life traveling around on his motorcycle. Luther was a wonderful man and his laugh and smile were contagious. The only blessing is that he is now with the Lord and reunited with Laurie. God bless his friends and family that will miss him in their lives.
