M. GILLIS Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 26, 2008.
Age 86, of Saint Clair Shores, February 23, 2008. Former Chief Psychologist of Detroit Recorder's Court Psychiatric Clinic. Cherished wife of Philip for 61 years; beloved mother of Anne (Scott) Cooper, Catherine, Mary Lou, James (Alison), and Margaret (Tayfur) Ayalp. Loving grandmother of Renee, J. Adam, Joseph, Robert ("Mike"), Matthew, Zoe, Philip, Zachary, David, Conor, Erin, and Kurt. Her sisters Maria Luisa Palumbo, Maria Rosa Modica, Bianca Maria Falcone, and brothers Ettore and Mario Greco also survive her. She was the loving daughter of the late Guido and Anna Maria Greco. Teresa was born and raised in Palermo, Sicily, where she received the highest possible score, and was one of only two women, in her graduating law school class of 400. In Palermo, she also met and married Philip, a U.S. naval officer. After they settled in Grosse Pointe Park, she earned a masters degree in psychology and worked at the Recorder's Court Psychiatric Clinic for 25 years. She was a valued member of the American Association of University Women, the Fine Arts Society of Detroit, the Theatre Arts Club of Detroit, and Christ Child Society. She performed countless hours of volunteer services for her church and community. Teresa enriched the lives of family, friends, and strangers through her faith, kindness, generosity, and strength, and will live in our hearts always. A memorial mass will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, at Saint Peter the Apostle Church, 19801 Vernier Road (just west of I-94), Harper Woods, MI, 48225. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capuchin Monastery.

The world lost a great soul. I was one of those stranger Mrs. Gillis helped. Her faith in me changed my life. I was blessed with having our paths crossed.
