DURKIN, Madeleine

Madeleine was born on January 14, 1929, to Paul and Helen Cochrane at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. She graduated from Marycliff High School and had a wonderful childhood. Madeleine then attended Holy Names College and later married Jack H. Durkin on July 21, 1951, and they had three children. Madeleine led a very active life working at Bank of America (Seafirst) for 26 years and was past president of the Eastern Washington Retirement Chapter of Bank of America. She continued to be involved with her fellow retirees with annual Christmas parties and looked forward to this every year. Other interests included her friends, golf, card games, parties, celebrations, traveling, and going to Arizona (January-April) with Jack to golf and enjoy other gaming activities. She also helped organize her Marycliff class 1947 reunions twice a year, which continue. While the children were growing up, camping brought many years of happy memories, together with treasured times and adventures with her two grandchildren. Madeleine was an avid golfer and member, as well as past President, of the Indian Canyon Ladies Golf Club and Wednesdays became a fun and special day she enjoyed with her great golfing friends. She devoutly practiced faith at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes where she was active on many committees. Madeleine was a church docent, served on the altar society, and was a member of the social concerns. She was also active in the Serra Club of Spokane. Madeleine was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1989 and a few years later was diagnosed with advanced cancer. She attributes her upbeat attitude and active lifestyle in keeping her positive and not letting the cancer slow her down. She was an inspiration to all who knew her. She loved God, family, people and parties and her message to all was live, love, laugh and be happy! Madeleine is survived by her son, Jack (Andrea) Durkin, her daughter Kit (Peter) Jagoda, granddaughter, Sarah (Erick) Specht and grandson, Shaun Durkin, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack, of nearly 50 years, her lovely daughter, Mary Colleen, and her sisters, Sister Marian Cochrane SMJM and Bernice Herron. Madeleine and her family wish to give special thanks to the staff of Cancer Care Northwest and especially to Dr. Joni Nichols for the exceptional care over the past many years. Visitation will be Friday, June 16th from 10:00 AM to 4 PM at Hennessey Funeral Home on Division. A Rosary will be held at 6:30 PM at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside with a Mass of Christian Burial there on Saturday, June 17th at 10:00 AM. A reception will follow. Graveside services will be at 1:30 PM at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 N. Wall. In lieu of flowers, contributions would be appreciated to Hospice of Spokane, the Serra Club of Spokane or River's Wish Animal Sanctuary. What a wonderful neighbor to have for over 30 years. Madeleine was always friendly and upbeat. Her attitude of living life to the fullest was inspirational, and I am lucky to have had her as a friend. She will be missed by her neighbors.
