Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2025.
Major General Roger Reckling Blunt, Sr. (USA, Ret.) peacefully transitioned at his home in Washington, D.C, on Monday, May 5, 2025. He was born on October 12, 1930, to the late Harry Weeden Blunt, Jr. and Bertha Mildred Reckling Blunt in East Providence, Rhode Island. General Blunt, a fourth generation Rhode Island serviceman, gained a reputation for being innovative and was known for his skillful ability to analyze obstacles and develop thorough solutions. After graduating from East Providence Senior High School in 1948, he attended Brown University for two years, acquiring a General Liberal Arts degree. He then decided he wanted a career in the military, and told his mother: "Mom, if I go, I'm going as far as I can." In 1956, General Blunt graduated near the top of his class from West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree, and was the only Black graduate in his class. In 1962, he earned a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He later received an Honorary Doctor of Public Service Degree from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.

Major General Roger Reckling Blunt, Sr. (USA, Ret.) is survived by and leaves to mourn his wife, Vivian Bowers Blunt. Preceded in death by his first wife of 51 years DeRosette (Derrie) Yvonne Hendricks Blunt. From that union, he leaves four children, Roger, Jr., Jennifer, Amy, and Jonathan (Traci); five grandchildren, Nasya, Jennifer, Camille, Solomon, and Mari; and one great-grandchild, Sionne Micah. He also leaves two brothers, Harry Weeden and Gerald Oliver; one sister, Priscilla; six brothers-in-law; four sisters-in-law; and a host of other relatives, friends, colleagues, and business associates.

I was very saddened to just learn of the passing of Major General Blunt. He, his wife of 51 years, Derrie, and my parents, Thomas and Evelyn Duckenfield, were very good friends and members of some of the same social groups.

May light perpetual shine upon him and may fond memories of him be a blessing to his family.

General Blunt will always be remembered for his rich legacy of accomplishment and achievement. There is much inspiration in his dedication to service for our nation. Let him be remembered for touching the lives of countless others, and for being fortunate to marry Vivian Bowers Blunt who cared for, nurtured and promoted his well being until General Blunt was called home. May he rest in perfect peace.

When I got into the construction industry in 1971, Tyroc Construction was the largest Minority Construction Company in DC. and Roger was the Owner and Chief Executive Officer of the company. I met him around 1980 when he was the President of the DC Minority Contractors Association. I would always see him at major construction events and was proud to become a friend. While Essex Construction was still striving in the industry, Roger decided to re-energize Tyroc Construction and asked me to be the President. It was one of the biggest honors of my career to serve as President of Tyroc for 3 years. Roger became my Mentor and the one who most inspired me to continue to build my own legacy in this industry. Even though I lost connection with him, I'm saddened to hear of his passing. He is considered a true Legend in our industry. May he Rest in Peace.

Working with General Blunt was a truly one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. He was a remarkable individual, and it was an honor to have him and provided the necessary care. I will always remember his incredible kindness and his generous spirit- he genuinely loved to share his knowledge and insights. His scholarly mind and intelligence were truly inspiring, and I always looked forward to our conversations. He taught me so much, and I will cherish those memories. He will be greatly missed by everyone who had the privilege of knowing General Blunt. My thoughts are with you and your beloved family.

E'ma I'm sorry to hear of the passing of your beloved Roger. Though I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I know that you loved him dearly by way of our telephone conversations. I pray that you find yourself engulfed in the love of family and friends, I pray that you summon the strength to call on Jesus when you feel alone, because he's always there! Vivian, our condolences on your loss, our congratulations on Roger´s gain.

Sometimes people or events can reshape or alter your life, Roger is that kind of person.

The first time I met Roger I overwhelmed by all his historical accomplishments, but I quickly learned that his greatest strength was his humility. I will his conversations and wit but the seeds he sowed will continue to be harvested by all who knew him and loved him. He has a new assignment and has gotten the highest award by being in the presence of Christ.

God bless

My condolences to the widow and children of Major General Roger Blunt, Sr., whom I admired and for whom I held deep respect when I worked at the Greater Washington Board of Trade. He was one of the two major catalysts for the vision of the Community Business Partnership--a project that linked neighborhood-based small business owners with members of the Board of Trade. Those win-win partnerships afforded expanded market share for the products and services offered by the small businesses, which growth then created jobs in their communities and neighborhoods. Rest in peace in your business and creative powers Roger.

I had the pleasure of working with Roger at the Bluestone group as his chief operating officer. We had several memorable moments in Africa preparing for the `epine dorsale´ project. This picture is taken with me and Roger at a baseball the baseball game, in Baltimore. I will miss him dearly! Charles Stuppard, PhD.

In Honor of General Roger Blunt
By Paul Delkaso, President & CEO, Tristar and Tritente Global Energy Group

To say General Roger Blunt served would be too small a word for a man who embodied duty, devotion, and divine purpose. As a retired General of the United States Army, he stood as a sentinel of justice and faith-"blessed in spirit," indeed, for the kingdom of heaven is his inheritance.

He did not merely serve his country; he consecrated every fiber of his being to it. With painstaking vigor, he wove discipline and grace into every mission, every decision, every breath of leadership.

To his beloved wife Vivian-a brilliant businesswoman and a solution-oriented force in every matter I´ve ever brought to her-I extend my deepest condolences. Her strength is unmistakable; her partnership with the General was nothing short of extraordinary.

As President and CEO of Tritente Global Energy Group, I salute a life that was both bold and blessed. May his legacy be a guiding star to all of us who believe in purpose, honor, and service beyond self.

May he rest in eternal peace.

Adieu our dear Gen. Roger Blunt. As a retired General of the USA Army, you were the "blessed poor in spirit" for the kingdom of heaven is your inheritance. You were so painstakingly vigorous in your service to God through your thunderous singing voice of God among the awesome church choir of the Sixth Presbyterian Church of Washington DC. We all admired and appreciated you a lot. We will definitely miss you. May Almighty God receive your soul and grant you a peaceful rest in His bosom in Jesus precious name.
