MAJOR RODDY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2016.
MAJOR GENERAL (RET) PATRICK MCRAE RODDY, SR. Major General (Ret.) Patrick McRae Roddy, Sr., passed away at 83 years of age in Shawnee, Kan., on September 25, 2016. He was born in 1933 in Tacoma, Wash., and was a graduate of Seattle Preparatory ('51) and Seattle University ('55). He was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in the U.S. Army through ROTC and later earned an MBA from Syracuse University. He served numerous tours overseas including Korea, West Germany, and 2 assignments in Vietnam, including commanding the 79th Maintenance Battalion. Pat served 27 years in the Army as an Ordnance officer, retiring at the rank of Major General in 1982, and was subsequently inducted in the U.S. Army Ordnance Hall of Fame. Upon retirement from the Army, he relocated to Massachusetts where he joined Raytheon Corporation, Missile Systems Division. By the early 1990s he had risen to the role of President of Raytheon Service Company. Pat retired from Raytheon in 1997, and he and Barbara moved to Venice, Fla., where golf filled their days and friends, their evenings. In 2006, they moved back to their roots in Washington State, settling in University Place, Wash. They both subsequently relocated to Shawnee, Kan. Pat's retirement years were spent traveling with his wife Barbara, golfing and enjoying life with his friends and family. He also enjoyed volunteering his time and energy at the Veterans Administration and was quite active in the Catholic Church, volunteering as a Eucharistic Minister and with the Knights of Columbus. His sense of humor and gift of storytelling will be missed by his family and friends alike. Pat is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Barbara A. Roddy; four children, Gregory P. Roddy of Burke, Va.; Leslie M. Nelson (Jim) of Shawnee, Kan.; Lisa A. Roddy (John Morum), of Tahuya, Wash.; and Patrick M. Roddy, Jr. (Katherine) of Fayetteville, North Carolina; his brother, Mike Roddy (Vicki) of Portland, Ore.; and four loving grandchildren, Kaitlin and Hannah Roddy, Christine and Kathryn Nelson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Marjory (McRae) Roddy. A funeral with full military honors will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages contributions to the Fisher House Foundation or other charity.
