Mal's boundless love of running marathons was the stuff of legends. He seemed happiest when at a road race, among friends and competitors, whose respect for him had no equal. Joe Rottino, who interviewed Mal for Islandwide Runner magazine, wrote: "Mal Bertram has never really been a mid-pack runner. He has run the long, hard races with courage and style and speed that have placed him in front of the pack. To see him then, at least for one afternoon, regain that position . . . is to believe that, `God´s in His heaven, all´s right with the world.'"

Barbara we are so sorry to hear of your sad loss but will always remember Mal and his "gals ".
when he would stride into Sweet seasons with you on one arm and one of your friends on the other, he would order a martini and also always had a joke. I never knew he was a man of the church until he saw my endgagement the ring and the sparkle in my eye and offered to marry Us.
Which he did and he made the day so special for us, one we will never forget.
All our Love Helen and Ian xx

To Barbara, Mal, Lee, Lori, and the entire Bertram family--know that I am with you in spirit as you say goodbye to your family patriarch. It is so difficult to believe that such a vibrant person is gone. I've never met anyone quite like him, and doubt that I will again. This month the members of my church are reading the Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi every day, and as I do so, I am reminded of Mal, especially the second paragraph: "Make me a channel of your peace, where there is despair in life, let me bring hope, where there is darkness, only light, and where there is sadness, ever joy."
