Dr. Malcolm A. McCannel

I cherish my memories of being Dr McCannel's patient since I was 7 years old in the 1950's He always greeted me by my last name like I was one of the "boys." He reminded me of Johnathon Winters with his jovial presence and I was amazed by the art in his office and examining rooms, especially the little leather hippo that resided under a footrest. Recently I attended his estate sale in Kenwood and saw him leaving as I was arriving, a wonderful last glimps of an incredible fellow. I have some little licquor glasses from that sale and I think of him every time I take a sip! Rest in Peace you wonderful man.

was such a great conversationalist. He
will be greatly missed.

Dr. McCannel was truly a remarkable man. As a child I used to visit his home and play with his children and I always felt welcome. He would invite me to go along with some of his children to places such as "Excelsior Amusement Park". He visited me when I was in the hospital. Even at the young age that I was, he would spend time with me. He and his family made a lasting impression on me and were great role models at a significant time in my life. He has touched many lives.

I've known Mac since the mid 60s when my boss at Dayton's recommended him as my Dr. When he found out I had an art background, he made it a practice to take me on a tour of recent pieces in the office each time I came in for an exam. Many years later, we reconnected as friends and have been ever since. I recall with great fondness an evening at our home with other friends, where he retailed us with amazing stories told with that wonderful booming voice of his. He was truly one of a kind and a true humanitarian! We'll miss you Mac!

Malcolm McCannel was true humanitarian, surgeon and teacher, who inspired many of us, including myself, to push the limits of what we can do in eye surgery. May God bless him for all his great work and continue to inspire us to do better.

Dr. McCannel was a well known figure at the old Abbott hospital when I was a student there. He was a big man, with a BIG booming voice. When Dr. Mac talked, you listened. He especially enjoyed occasionally treating the student nurses - those he judged as giving good care to his patients - by taking a group for a most enjoyable lunch at ‘Charlie's Cafe Exceptional' in downtown Mpls.. Dr. Mac was truly One of a Kind. May he RIP.

Dear McCannel Family,

Your father was very good sense of humor to these patiants. My father, Frederick (90 years old, passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2003) and mother, Inez (95 years old, passed away on Friday 4 2009). They had beem married for 68 wonderful years. May God be with Mac.

Dr. McCannel's family will receive messages worldwide from friends and former clients. While he was idolized in life, you will be amazed at the stories you read or hear about following his passing.

I am one of those. My mother and many of her friends were vocal devotees of his medical talent and personal attentiveness. I will always remember a time when my mother called for an appointment and was told he was "out of town" with his family enjoying a well-deserved vacation and would return in thirty days. It was as though someone had told her that her best friend was not reachable. From that point on she made her six annual appointments a year in advance to be assured of his care. No one else would do! Rest assured there were thousands of others who felt the same way.

He truly made a difference.
