Ralph Manley Johnson

Ralph Manley "Pops" Johnson, 80, passed peacefully on June 22, 2024, at the Veteran's Victory House in Walterboro, SC, surrounded by family. Born on April 27, 1944, in Seneca, South Carolina, he was a son to the late Minnie Orr and Charles Eugene Johnson. His life was marked by his steadfast patriotism and service, having served in the United States Air Force stationed in the Azores, which formed his sense of discipline and duty.

After his military service, Manley built a notable career as a construction superintendent and master carpenter, skills that he took great pride in and that were evident in every project he completed. Beyond his professional life, he was a devoted family man, described by those who knew him as loyal, tender-hearted, loving, generous, kind, funny, and hard-working.

Manley was the beloved husband of the late Andrea Johnson and a loving father to his children, Sherrie (Shane) Benson of Dorchester, Karrie Lord of Moncks Corner, and Charles (Heather) Johnson of Branchville, SC. He was preceded in death by his son, Chris Johnson, and eight brothers and sisters. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, James (Tiffany) Chapman of Charleston, SC, Joseph (Amber) Chapman of Central, SC, Bryan Gibbs of Charleston, Shayne Gibbs of Charleston, ten great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, and his dearly loved cats Lucky and Fluffy-Butt.

Pops found great joy in spending time with his great-grandchildren, Bailey, and his namesake, Little Manley.

An avid outdoorsman, Manley cherished fishing and hunting. He could often be found with a book in his hand or sharing stories with his family and friends. He will be remembered for his immense love and loyalty to his family.

A Celebration of Life for Manley will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Juvenile Diabetes Association, causes that were dear to his heart.

Arrangements are being handled by Simplicity Cremation and Burial in Ladson, SC. His life was a testament to the values he held dear, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
