Marcel PRUD'HOMME Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 28, 2017.
PRUD'HOMME, The
Honourable Marcel P.C.
November 30, 1934 - January 25, 2017

The Honourable Marcel Prud'homme passed away in Ottawa on January 25, 2017 at the age of 82. Son of the late Dr. Hector Prud'homme and the late Lucia Paquette, he was also predeceased by his eleven brothers and sisters. He is survived and will be missed by his nieces and nephews (especially Geoffrey, from Ottawa) as well as their spouses and children, faithful friends, former colleagues and former staff members. After studying law at the University of Montreal and the University of Ottawa, he was elected Liberal MP for the riding of Saint-Denis in 1964 and was subsequently re-elected eight times. In 1993, he accepted an appointment to the Senate of Canada as an independent Senator, a position he held until the age of mandatory retirement in 2009. Almost 46 years of service to Canada's Parliament made him, at the end of his career, the Institution's Dean. He held multiple functions in both Chambers, including being elected Chairman of the National Liberal Caucus by his peers in 1987. Politician and passionate speaker, he encouraged dialogue to promote peace in the world. He was particularly interested in international relations, nuclear disarmament, and was a pioneer of parliamentary diplomacy in Canada. He was also a defender of human rights and linguistic duality, which he constantly promoted in federal institutions. However, his first service was always to the citizens of the constituency he represented brilliantly as a proud Montrealer and Quebecer. In recognition of his outstanding services, he was made a Member of the Queen's Privy Council, by Her Majesty, during her visit to Canada in 1992. He received five Canadian commemorative medals, was decorated by several countries, including Russia, Morocco, Cuba and Hungary, and received a doctorate honoris causa from the University of Algiers. His significant contribution to Canadian political life for nearly 60 years, including over 45 years as a parliamentarian, is a rare achievement that earned him the respect and recognition of Canada. Friends are invited to visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry located at 315 McLeod Street in Ottawa (613-233-1143) on Friday, February 3, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, February 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, February 4, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica located at 385 Sussex Drive in Ottawa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Montfort Hospital Foundation (613-746-4621) or to the Division of Nephrology via the Ottawa Hospital Foundation (613-761-4295).

I was very lucky to get to know this giant of a kind man of Canadian politics. He was a hero of mine when I went to University and when he walked into the office of the Senator I worked for, it was like meeting a rock star. It's been countless years off and on. The stories, the precedents, the history behind the stories, the moral of the stories and his smile will be forever missed. Such a rare, brilliant, risky public servant elected eight times by his constituents. He started the Parliamentary Associations of the Senate and every Senator should be thankful to take advantage of what he did. Salut Marcel, Senator!

My sympathies to Marcel's family and to all who knew this magnificent and eccentric Canadian patriot. I worked with and spend much time with Marcel close to forty years.
We supported him in Parliament and every endeavor that he undertook. I cannot possibly express all my sentiments as Marcel enveloped us in the mantle of his affection and love for
Canada. He was the first Parliamentarian to advocate for the lost generation of Palestinians. He stood tall in the midst of derision by the press and his brother/sister Parliamentarians
and others who simply did not understand his advocacy for the downtrodden in the world. He had a large vision of his mission during his earthly sojourn. I knew the heart of this man
and respected him for his forthright positions in every platform afforded to him.
Marcel was a humanitarian to the core championing cases throughout the globe. Tall, upright, he had a sense of propriety from the old school and never gained personally from the positions he held. A friend of St George, the supported the movement that began in the basement of St. George for there to be a national body representing the Arab concerns regardless of religion that today is in place in Ottawa. Responsible for shepherding several grants to the Church, he lost no occasion to push the parish towards involvement in Canadian and Quebec affaires making St. George one of the most prominent parishes in Canada on the national scene.
We stayed in touch until recently even in retirement, I could never forget the bond of friendship that we shared with both Marcel and Rita., Imagine all the governments he served under but he cherished the Trudeau years as his best, relishing to tell stories during those years. You cannot imagine the delight he had when Justin was elected Prime Minister, I believe I was the first to call him in dialysis from Arizona telling him of the news.
There is a funny story that is forever embedded in my mind. He adopted and we adopted him at St George. One festive occasion he was seated in the front, as usual, respecting his position. During the service, he began to admire the new parish seating robe that his friend Charles Auger donated. He stood up fidgeting his finger into the bracket, in which he stuck his middle finger. He could not extract his finger and all through the rest of the service until rescued by Adel Elian, he stood lop sided. Can you imagine that tall gentleman standing unable to move, well, we could not stop laughing watching Marcel. He took this with his usual aplomb.
Farwell, my dearest of friends Marcel, a man of great distinction who valued the human person above all worldly possessions. Khalil Gibran once wrote in the Prophet: ONE DOES NOT KNOW THE DEPTHS OF LOVELove Always your friend
