Marcia Van Scoy Davis passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on July 23, 2022. She was 85 and lived a full and vibrant life. Marcia was the daughter of Charles and Ethel Van Scoy, sister of Susan Van Scoy (Coffman) and she was raised in Syracuse, New York. She graduated from Syracuse High School and Ohio Wesleyan University before going on to earn a master's degree from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. She worked as a teacher and then as a community college counselor until the age of 72. She valued the opportunities in life that can come with greater access to education and by helping others. Early in her career she worked as a teacher in the Shaker Heights, Ohio public schools (Ludlow School) and supported its pioneering work around integration. Marcia also had a love for volunteering at the Shaker Lakes Nature Center and through her Unitarian church affiliations. She was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Marcia and her husband Jim celebrated over 50 years of marriage together. She will be remembered for her interest in lifelong learning, healthy eating(!), telling stories about her extended family and caring for her beloved Tibetan terriers. Her love of the Finger Lakes region and Skaneateles Lake in New York helped to create decades of experiences for family and friends. Marcia loved bird watching and gardening and was passionate about nature. She liked to take family and friends on nature walks where she would share her knowledge about flowers, downy woodpeckers and great blue herons. She devoted time to the pastoral committee at her church. She loved music, enjoyed playing the piano and regularly attended the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra with her husband Jim. If there was ever a champion of Cleveland and its many treasures, it was her. She will be deeply missed by family and many friends as a charismatic, determinedly spirited, and caring person. Marcia Davis is survived by her family, husband James B. Davis, son Paul Davis and wife Michelle; daughter Kim Davis and husband Brandon; along with grandchildren Henry, Ben, Kira and Carys. Surviving family include her sister-in-law Mary Ann Davis, niece Elizabeth Davis, husband Mark, niece Laura Monroe, husband Mike and grandniece Elizabeth, and niece Alice Tornquist, husband David, grandniece Caroline and grandnephew Matthew; brother-in-law David Coffman, wife Carol, and nephew Mathew Coffman, wife Sharon, grandnephew Matthew and grandniece Eva. Friends may join in a Celebration of Life service at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Cleveland at 21600 Shaker Boulevard, Shaker Heights, Ohio 44122 on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 11 am. Should friends and family desire, contributions to the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, shakerlakes.org, or The Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, clevelandorchestra.com, may be made in Marcia's memory. Marcia was my best friend in high school, a bridesmaid in my wedding and a fellow lover of nature and environmental education. I will miss her wonderful smile, her laugh, her cheery Christmas greetings and our occasional phone calls.May her family treasure their memories of good times together.
