Margaret Comstock Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 1, 2010.
COMSTOCK, MARGARET SEITZ, 102, died November 28, 2010 at her residence in her bedroom of 60 years. She was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Seitz. As she said about her life, looking back on the 20th century, "I've lived most of it." As a young girl, she had ridden in an early electric car. It was guided by a joystick and had vases of roses on the inside. It made an impression.

Mrs. Comstock graduated from Louisville Normal School and went on to teach music in the elementary schools. She married Albert Bruce Comstock, who would be her husband for 50 years. She continued her love of music by singing in the Highland Presbyterian Church Choir, directing the youth choir there, and singing in the Louisville Chorus. She also went to the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado for 20 summers. After her husband' s death in 1983, she took her love and passion for music on a long journey to do good works. She was on the board of directors of The Louisville Orchestra and endowed the Piano Chair. She was also on the board of directors of Marin Alsops Orchestra Concordia in New York City, where she attended meetings often. She met a young pianist, Tien Ying, through her sponsoring of up and coming musicians. She sponsored his 3 year tenure at the U of L school of music as visiting artist in piano. They developed a strong friendship over the years. She also established a small endowment to sponsor students in voice and piano at The School of Music. The final sizable gift to the U of L school of music supported the chorus's of director Kent Hatteberg. The Margaret Comstock Concert Hall at The University of Louisville is named for her.

She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Comstock; sister, Charlotte Kimbel; neice, Dr. Maggie Sparks; and nephews, Donald Seitz, Dave Kimbel, and Tom Wedekind; and also her beloved dog, Tien Ying.

Graveside funeral service will be 3p.m. on Saturday at Cave Hill Cemetery. Friends may gather at the cemetery's Broadway entrance at 2:50 p.m. Visitation will be at her residence from noon-2 p.m. on Saturday.

The family wishes to thank her devoted caregivers of many years, Angela Arnold, Judy Buckles, Tina Ellis, Patty Hodge, Sharon Poore, and Teresa Smith. Arrangements under the direction of Pearson's.

I had the great pleasure of taking care of Mrs Comstock for seven years,We had many great times, Her laugh would fill the house. She had a great love for shopping. I can say we truley loved her. Many of us have shared tears in saying goodbye. weeping endures for a night but joy will comes in the morning. Seven means completion. I say to Nancy hold on to the great times. We will always be here for you. Goodbye for now.

My grandfather, Charles Sr., was brother to Joe Seitz. Want to send condolences to the family of Mrs. Comstock. Aunt Katherine Wilson used to keep us posted on your family and I remember seeing Maggie and David several times at her home. This brings back memories of "Aunt Kitty." She always came to our family Christmas with her box of goodies, gifts which included last year's fruitcakes and outdated calendars, and, dare I mention, a few things from the Salvation Army Store. She's been gone a long time but was our connection to the Comstocks, Wedekinds, and Kimbels. We'll be out-of-town for the weekend so will regretfully miss seeing you. Blessings, Tricia Seitz Cox

I had the pleasure of being taught Music by Mrs. Comstock at Emmett Field Elementary in the 70s. As a boy, I remember her great love of music. Now, as a man working for the University of Louisville, I am proud that her legacy carries on at our School of Music...such a nice tribute to a lady who touched so many lives with her love of music!
