Margaret Dixon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 17, 2025.
Our beloved Margaret passed away at the age of 78. She grew up in Middleton, TN, the daughter of Grady Lee Dixon, a merchant, and Grace Hunter Dixon, a primary school teacher. Her father allowed her to help in his general merchandise store where she learned to communicate with the public. Picking cotton in the fall taught her the valuable rewards of hard work. Margaret enjoyed playing basketball for the junior high and high school teams. She was an avid reader and remained so for her entire life.

Graduating from Middleton High School in 1964, she moved on to attend Memphis State University where she graduated in 1968 with a bachelor's and later earned a master's degree. Her professional career began as a 4 th grade teacher, but she worked as a Guidance Counselor for the majority of her career. She served in both Memphis City Schools and Desoto County Schools.

Margaret always possessed the spirit of adventure. Her interest in water sports extended from canoeing to scuba diving. Biking was a lifelong activity and in midlife she acquired a love for pickle ball, even participating in the Mississippi Senior Olympics. As a member of the Tennessee Trails Association, she hiked extensively for 20 years. She was also an active member of the Bluff City Canoe Club with whom she kayaked on many rivers throughout the United States.

Margaret's love of travel and experiencing different cultures explains her involvement in Friendship Force International, an organization that promotes global understanding and cultural exchange through homestay journeys. She served as Memphis chapter president for four years.

Margaret was a member of Unity Church of Memphis and faithfully served on many projects. She had a heart for people in need and through volunteering in many areas, she took her candle and lit her world. Her generous spirit, kindness, intelligence and enthusiasm will be missed by all who knew her.

She leaves a twin sister Carolyn Pierce and her husband Woody Pierce of Germantown. She leaves two nephews: Jason Pierce (Jenna) of Austin, TX. and their sons Valen and River; and Brandon Pierce (Rachel) of Chicago IL, and their two children Adrian and Janie Grace. In addition, she leaves her dear friend and companion Jim Wadlington of Olive Branch, MS.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial donations be made to either the Unity Church of Memphis or the Getwell Church of Southaven.

Margaret was a beautiful, fun, intelligent and caring friend. She invited me to join the Friendship Force of Memphis and the Spanish study/dinner group when I moved to Memphis from Naples, Florida eight years ago. I succeeded her as President of the Friendship Force. We miss her energy, enthusiasm and "joie de vivre" in all she did in these organizations and all of life. Sail on to the Light.

Margaret welcomed me to Friendship Force in 2022 after I retired from Dyersburg State Community College. We also enjoyed the same Spanish class. I was always impressed by her sense of adventure, her curiosity and her determination to improve her understanding of the Spanish language and culture. I will miss her friendship and companionship in our weekly Spanish classes.

My condolences to Margaret“s family. I only knew Margaret for a year and we became close quickly. She was sweet and invited me and my husband to all her activities that she and Jim would do. I hope to follow her ideals and enjoy life to the fullest. I will miss her so much. As do all the pickleball group.
