Margaret R. Hardy, 99, of Orleans passed away on October 1, 2008 in Orleans. She was born on November 16, 1908 in Fraconia, NH a daughter of George and Kate (Roe) McDanolds. In 1935 she married Forrest Hardy who predeceased her in 1999. She received her bachelor’s degree in teaching from the University of New Hampshire and retired from the Essex School System in 1972. In 1930 she began her teaching career at Orleans High School where she taught English and French. She took time off for her children and then taught twenty more years at the junior level in Glover, Barton, and Essex Junction. Margaret was an active member of the following organizations; Orleans Federated Church, Orleans Historical Society, trustee of the Old Stone House, and a member of the Book and Thumble Club, and the Federated Church Women’s Society. She started playing the organ for the churches at the age of 13 and she stopped playing a few years ago at the Orleans Federated Church. Margaret was also a rug braider and made many rugs for the church bazaars for 30 years (4 rugs per year). She is survived by a son Steven Hardy and companion Linda Russell of Rumford, ME, a daughter Diana Mayer and her husband Barry of Shaftsbury, VT, 7 grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, she is predeceased by a daughter Frances Hemenway, a brother Roe McDanolds, and a sister Martha Frizzell. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire contributions in her memory may be made to the Old Stone House Historical Society, 28 Old Stone House Road, Brownington, VT 05860, or to the Orleans Federated Church, School Street, Orleans, VT 05860. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Curtis-Britch-Converse-Rushford Funeral Homes, locally family owned and operated.
