Margaret Judith Laney ("Judy")

July 23, 1945 - December 15, 2024

Margaret Judith Laney, lovingly known as "Judy," passed away peacefully on December 15, 2024, at the age of 79, surrounded by her cherished family. Born on July 23, 1945, in Camden, South Carolina, Judy was the beloved daughter of John Thirston Laney and Leona Smith Laney, both of Camden, South Carolina, who preceded her in death. She made her home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she spent the majority of her life creating a legacy of love, kindness, and joy.

Judy was a devoted mother to her two children, Charles Frederick Abernethy, who preceded her in death in 2018, and Kathryn Laney Abernethy, who is married to Stephen Barrett Delaney, Jr. She was the proud and loving grandmother of four grandsons: Grant and Caleb Abernethy, and Luke and Leo Delaney. Judy shared a close bond with her brother and sister-in-law, John and Susan Laney, of Black Mountain, North Carolina, and her nephew, Jason Laney, of Washington, D.C.

A true matriarch, Judy cherished her family deeply. She took immense joy in doting on her grandsons and nephew, sharing her love for life with countless cousins and loyal friends. She found happiness in traveling, spending time with her loved ones, and engaging in her passions. Judy was an avid bridge player, a dedicated patron of the arts, and a loyal fan of Carolina Basketball, rarely missing a game.

A gathering to celebrate Judy's life will be held in Chapel Hill on January 12, 2025, at a private residence. For specific details, please email [email protected].

Judy will be laid to rest in the spring of 2025 in her hometown of Camden, South Carolina, alongside her beloved son, Charles, and her parents.

Her vibrant spirit, generous heart, and steadfast devotion to her family and friends will leave an enduring mark on all who knew her.

Judy has been a generous and warm presence in our neighborhood for thirty plus years. When my husband and I showed interest in renewing our bridge playing days, she brought over numerous books on the new bidding convention and enthusiastically offered to share her expertise. Long ago when our children were growing up she was always a friendly and helpful neighbor that made our street a safe and great place to raise our family.
We will always remember her fondly.
