Margaret McMullin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2024.
Margaret A. McMullin, MSN, APRN-BC, OCN, NP, of Braintree, MA, passed away on October 11, 2024, peacefully at home while surrounded by loved ones at the age of 66.

Born in Boston, MA, on August 13, 1958, Margaret dedicated her entire life to helping others. After graduating from Mission Church High School in 1976, Margaret earned her Bachelor's Degree from the Boston College School of Nursing in 1980. To accomplish her goal of becoming a nurse practitioner, she went on to complete her Master's Degree from the MGH Institute of Health Professions in 1998. Raised on Mission Hill, Margaret moved to Braintree in 1986, where she started her own family.

Margaret spent 44 years working in the medical field at Columbia Presbyterian, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Mass General Hospital, and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Her 24 years caring for patients at the Lowe Center for Thoracic Oncology at DFCI were among Margaret's proudest. Margaret earned a reputation as a driven and caring colleague eager to mentor young professionals. Her patients, many of whom considered her a friend as much as a provider, found solace in her ability to listen, her comforting words, and her dedication to individualized care.

While not caring for patients, Margaret loved spending time with her grandchildren. Her trips to Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, and Spain were most memorable. A perfect Saturday morning for Margaret would be spent on her porch with a cup of coffee, her dog Whitney by her side, catching up with friends, or reading a good book.

Margaret will forever be missed by her son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Carly McMullin; daughter, Kelly McMullin; grandchildren Rory, Wilder, and Hudson McMullin; as well as many beloved siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

Margaret's legacy will live on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched. Her loss is deeply felt by all who had the privilege to know her, but her spirit of care and kindness will continue to inspire all who follow in her footsteps.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, at 10 AM at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help (1545 Tremont St, Boston, MA 02120), with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margaret's honor to MGH's Esophageal Cancer Research Fund; details are available at margaretmcmullin.com

Just heard today about Margaret when taking my wife for her checkup...to say we were shocked is an understatement. She was honest, direct and caring. Always there when you needed a question answered at uncertain times. We will always remember her for being kind to us...Rest in Peace Margaret

Your mother was my NP at Dana-Farber. She treated me with such compassion, love, dignity, gentleness and candor. We always found time to laugh. We know she is in heaven. Tony S. (and Loretta C.)

We have been neighbors of Margaret for nine years. We were so very saddened to hear of her passing. Memories of her brought us such joy when we would see her with her beautiful dog and friend Whitney. I would meet her in the hall way with Whitney and had the best conversations while Whitney would play with our cat Nala. Will terribly miss our talks while she sat on her deck with Whitney as I walked by. Margaret was the kindest and most thoughtful person you´d ever want to meet and have as a friend/neighbor. She was taken too soon and has left a feeling of love with everyone she had gotten to know especially our friends in the building. Rest in Peace knowing we will never forget you.

Words cannot express how sorry I am that Margaret is no longer with us . I mention her name regularly to people I meet that are going into nursing. I tell them my mother´s nurse, Margaret was more than just a nurse she was a friend, a therapist, and just an all around special person. I tell them the world would be a better place if it was made up of more Margaret´s. My mother, sister and I were lucky to have met her.

We will miss you Margaret.

Love your biggest fan, Jason

I´m heartbroken to learn of Margaret´s passing. I was a patient of hers in 1997, she did my chemo and took care of me like I was her daughter, as I was only 23 at the time. We stayed in touch ever since and I´ve been praying for her. I can´t find the words to explain the impact she made on my recovery- taking calls from my parents and guiding us throughout my treatment and beyond. And I´m so grateful I spoke to her a few weeks ago to tell her what she meant to me. She was a dear friend and will never be forgotten. Thinking of all her friends and family at this most difficult time.

I worked with Margaret as an RN at DFCI and held her in very high regard. She was a spitfire to say the least. Direct, funny, endlessly compassionate. She was both a friend and a colleague, easy to approach and ask questions, you got a real honest answer from her. I really appreciated her attitude and her authenticity. She will be deeply missed. I have patients that ask about her often, they cared for her as deeply as she cared for them.
