Margaret Shutterly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 18 to Nov. 19, 2002.
Margaret A. Shutterly, 46, of Richmond, died at home on November 16, 2002 surrounded by many of those who knew and loved her. Cherishing her memory are her husband, Michael T. Shutterly; three sons, Jeffrey, Andrew and Nicholas; three sisters, Mary Amelia Ashcraft and her husband, David of Raleigh, N.C., Martha Ann Witzig and her husband, Tom of Annandale, and Melissa A. Hartman and her husband, Alan of Woodbridge; a brother, Brooke R. Rector of Laurel, Md.; her mother, Frances B. Rector of Kensington, Md.; a great-aunt, Elizabeth Wilson of Durham, N.C.; her mother-in-law, Nijole R. Shutterly; a brother-in-law, R. Steve Shutterly of Boise, Idaho; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. She was briefly preceded in death by her father, Ralph L. Rector, who lovingly went ahead to prepare the way for her. Margaret was a graduate of the University of Delaware who served for 12 years as an analyst with the U.S. Department of Defense; after the fall of the Soviet Union, she gave up that career and moved with her family to Richmond, where she devoted herself to rearing her beloved children, each of whom brought great joy to her life. Filled with a boundless love of life, she was a friend to all living things, regularly befriending and at times saving stray and wild animals, who naturally turned to her for help. She truly embodied her name, which means ’pearl, born of starlight’, and while her body has faded, her light shines on in the hearts of all who were blessed to have known her. Visitation will be held Tuesday, November 19, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street Rd., where a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, November 20.

Michael,

Your and Margaret's love for each other has been such an inspiration for those of us fortunate enough to have crossed your path, even if only through your words. Know that there are people all over the country who weep with you and your family. By sharing with us the exquisite stories of your love for your sweet Margaret, you have ensured her a poignant tribute -- that all of us, by remembering your love for her, will love our own and others that much better. I will lift you and your family up in prayer for all the rest of my days.

Thank you,

Michelle (shellybird)

Michael,

Although I was not priviledged enough to meet your beloved wife, your love was clear in every word you wrote.

Know that you have many friends, known and unknown, who are thinking of you at this time. Let us send you our love as a source of strength to you and your family.

We should all be so lucky to have felt so deep a passion as you and Margaret shared.

Peacefully yours,

Donna (christie)

Michael, All of us were lucky to have known you and Margaret and the infinite love you have shared with your children. My heart goes out to you, and I thought of you when I read this: "Death is but nothing at all. I have only stepped away into the next room. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way you used to. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. One brief moment and all will be as it was before, only better, infinitely happier. And forever, forever we will be together, again."

I have often read the words of Michael Shutterly as he spoke of his sweet Margaret....if only I could express my sorrow at his loss as eloquently as he expressed his love for her. My thoughts are with you, Michael, and all of your family.
