Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 11, 2016.
Margret B. Burgess (neé Krug), passed away at the age of 93 on December 1, 2016 at her home in Tallahassee, Florida after a short illness. She is the daughter of the late Joseph Krug and Vera Freiling of Berrien Springs, Michigan, and was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on December 8, 1922. Margret met the love of her life when she met Harold Burgess in the 8th grade and married him on Valentine's Day in 1942. Margret was a graduate of Berrien Springs High School in 1940. She was named valedictorian of her senior class. Margret was active on the school publications, The Drift and The Canoe and also took part in her junior and senior class plays. After high school she earned a diploma from South Bend College of Commerce.

Margret retired from Florida State University after a 30 year career wherein she worked for the Florida High School, the FSU Physics Department and Biophysics Department. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed feeding the wild birds that would visit her yard. She also enjoyed reading and wrote numerous poems starting at age 11.

Prayer (by Margret Krug, 1939, age 17)

Dear God, for warmth of blood and those few virtues I possess,

My thanks to Thee.

For strength, and will, and power to make that will my slave,

Dear God, my thanks to thee.

For love, a faithful heart that keeps in tune with love,

For Life, the dearest gift a donor ever gave,

For all the joys I find in sun, and waves, and wind,

For pleasure in the summer grass and winter sky,

For a spirit striving for perfection, yet remote,

And for my thankfulness itself,

My thanks to Thee, dear God, my thanks to Thee.

Margret was preceded in death by her husband Harold E. Burgess. Margret followed her husband Harold to his various military duty stations which included Japan at the end of WWII, Las Vegas, Nevada and Orlando, Florida before settling in Tallahassee in 1955. She is survived by her three sons; David Burgess (Sandra) of Canton, Georgia, Mark Burgess of Woodstock, Georgia and Lee Burgess of Tallahassee. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and by eight great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held in Tallahassee, Florida at a later date in the New Year. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Tallahassee Museum, 3945 Museum Drive, Tallahassee, Florida, 32310.

I worked for her for many years at the Physics Department and learned many life lessons from her. She also shared the amazing whipping cream recipe with me. She was a great lady. Suzy Hutcheson

We were sad, Lee, to read of your mother's passing. I have so many good memories of going to breakfast with her. We always said it was our favorite meal of the day. Then we would go shopping afterwards. Many years ago she made Christmas decorations from real eggs which she carefully covered with cut-out pictures and clear "polish" of some kind. Her beautiful eggs are hanging on my Christmas tree and remind me of her.

Margret enjoyed a good long life. She was one of those the Bible call especially strong.
