Maria Huizar Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 4, 2021.

Maria Sauceda Huizar of Jourdanton went to be with our Lord on January 29, 2021. Mary came into this world on April 1, 1948. She was born to Jose Sauceda and Clementina Cantu Sauceda.

In her early years, Mary was raised by her father and paternal grandmother along with two siblings, Joe and Anita. Later, her father married Vicenta Perez Sauceda. Soon the family grew with new siblings much to Mary’s delight. Early on, Mary had a love for babies that lasted her lifetime.

Mary attended Poteet schools and loved “everything Poteet”. As a young girl, Mary was an avid baseball player for Poteet. Another big festivity celebrated in Poteet in those days was the “Diez y Seis de Septiembre”. Mary vied for that coveted crown and won as Princess, of which she was so very proud. She was also known in those formative years as the girl with the long, flowing tresses that reached the back of her knees.

Mary like to stay busy and really like to work. Soon after high school she began working at Robert B. Green Hospital in San Antonio. From the time she entered the workforce she established a work ethic that come rain or shine she reported to work, and it lasted throughout her lifetime.

Soon enough, at a Poteet dance, she met the man she was to marry. On June 20, 1970, she married Jesus R. Huizar. They moved to Karnes City where they started their home and family. Soon they had their daughter, Valerie. After a few years they moved closer to home settling in Jourdanton to the present.

Over the last 30 years, Mary devoted herself to working as a Personal Care Provider and companion, becoming a CNA. She served a multitude of families all over Atascosa County with the care of their loved ones. She was never idle, became well known, recommended and seeked out for employment.

The care of others, especially the infirm, takes a special person, someone devoted to the task at hand, someone who care genuinely, has patience, is not self-serving, and can be depended upon and trusted with your loved ones. Such was Mary.

On a lighter note, Mary enjoyed life. She liked a good laugh. She enjoyed her novellas and shelling pecans while doing so. She was avid “Star Wars” fan from the first time she saw the movie to present. She had all the movies and multiple memorabilia. The ultimate was a visit to Universal Studios and the Star Wars ride that left her awestruck. She never forgot it. She also had a large collection of ceramic roosters, dishes, towels, cannisters, and mats. Mary played LOTTO and enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino. She was confident and hopeful that someday she would strike the big one.

Mary was always a helper. She helped with her time, with food, with money, sitting with family members or anyone who needed a companion. She was also a member of VFW Post 6970, Women’s Auxiliary. She especially liked to help during the Strawberry Festival. If you ever attended and you came upon the VFW stand and heard someone hawking “Coozies, get your coozies, support the Vets”, that was her.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Clementina, and stepmother, Vicenta Sauceda.

She is survived by her husband, Jesus R. Huizar; daughter, Valerie Huizar; adopted daughter, Kimberley Sauceda; Jesse’s daughter, Letticia Huizar, siblings Jose Sauceda (Adriana) of Dallas, Anita Parra of Colorado, Lupe Mancha (Rudy) of Poteet, Paul Sauceda (Diana) of Poteet, Roger Sauceda (Terry) of Poteet and multiple nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She will be greatly missed. May she rest in peace in the Lord’s loving arms.

Pallbearers are Gerardo Reyes, J. W. Evans, Rudy Mancha, Jr., Johnny Castillo, Isaiah Sauceda and Ana Lisa Mancha.
